Audi R8

Could Audi seriously consider dropping the 4.2-liter V-8 in favor of a four-cylinder, plug-in hybrid?

After more than seven years on the market, several special-edition models and three different racing iterations, the Audi R8 is set to receive its most important upgrade yet, in the form of a second-gen version, at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

The new R8 will continue to share its platform with the next-gen Lamborghini Gallardo, but Audi focused on making it lighter and more powerful. Also, while remaining faithful to its roots, the next R8 adopts a new look, with lots of design elements borrowed from the company’s current products. The second-gen R8 also employs many new elements made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP), a revised chassis, a new interior and several upgrades in the technology department.

As is typical for the R8, the new generation will be offered in both V-8 and V-10 versions, with both mills receiving power and fuel-economy boosts. Expect to see the new R8 hit U.S. showrooms for the 2016 model year, with a roadster version to follow a bit later.

Updated 02/19/2015: Audi unveiled a series of new images showing the R8 prototype under extreme testing sessions. A new video was also unveiled, so you can now hear the sound of the R8’s engine. Enjoy!
