Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

Our spy photographers have caught a production prototype version of the 2016 C-Class Coupe out testing. So we analyzed the images and put together a speculative preview of what may be in store when it hits dealers.

The first generation of the C-Class Coupe was originally developed as a last-minute afterthought following Mercedes-Benz’s decision to increase the size of the E-Class Coupe in its subsequent iterations. To be clearer, the current E-Class Coupe is a direct descendant of the CLK before it, which was initially conceived to slot between the C-Class and the E-Class as far as overall size goes. With that in mind, the latest E-Class Coupe is actually based on the same platform as the first C-Class Coupe, which appeared out of the blue when the sedan variant received it mid-cycle facelift in 2011.

Getting back to the subject at hand, the upcoming second-generation C-Class Coupe, internally-codenamed C205, will grow in size quite a fair amount, which, in theory, should create a rather tasty dilemma for certain customers. In short, the new C-Class Coupe should actually offer more interior space than the theoretically larger and more expensive E-Class Coupe, not to mention the fact that it will also be lighter and have a much more modern interior.

With under a year until it’s expected to be launched — the most recent reports suggest a 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show unveil — the second-generation C-Class Coupe has finally reached testing phase. I say "finally" because we’ve been seeing pre-production prototypes of the cabriolet version since 2013, yet the coupe has been keep hidden until recently. With that being said, judging from the amount of camouflage on the test car it seems that the model is very close to entering production.
