If you love pedalling on your way to work or simply on the cycling track then this piece of news will surely excite you. A Canadian company AeroVelo, maker of human-powered vehicles, pedalled its way to a new human-powered speed record at the 2015 World Human Powered Speed Challenge competition in Battle Mountain, Nevada.
The three-year-old Toronto-based design firm raced its speedbike, Eta, in the 200-metre men's race registering a speed of 138kmph. The speedbike shattered the previously held record of 133.78kmph for a human-powered vehicle set by Dutch cyclist Sebastiaan Bowier in 2013.
Eta is a Greek letter often referenced in engineering as the symbol for efficiency. This speedbike is aerodynamic and encloses the rider in a capsule which boasts of a frame made with carbon fibre. Inside, the driver nearly lies down, almost parallel with the ground to ride the vehicle. To navigate, the pilot consults an on-screen display powered by dual SD cameras, while pedalling his or her way into fame.
AeroVelo is no stranger to human-powered firsts. The company, had earlier, built the Snowbird Ornithopter, which brags the title of being the first human-powered flapping winged aircraft that took off in 2010.
