Rumours of Volkswagen wanting to enter Formula1 have been in the paddock for a while now. Although there hasn't been a confirmation from the German giant as yet, recent reports suggest that they might be looking at acquiring Red Bull. VW will not just enter into a partnership with Red Bull as an engine supplier but will look at buying the team altogether.
This move could be a welcome change for the energy-drink team. After winning four-consecutive championships from 2010-2013, the Red Bull team hasn't tasted similar success. In fact, they have gradually fallen off in the past few seasons owing to under-performance of the Renault engines.
However, Volkswagen is not expected to supply engines before 2018. Keeping in mind Red Bull's grievances with the Renault units, the team might break off its engine deal and make a shift to another supplier in the interim; the current favourite being Ferrari.
Whether VW will use its own name or one of its sub-brands in the pinnacle of open-wheel racing is still uncertain. But rumours of Audi's withdrawal from endurance racing could also mean that VW could use the Ingolstadt-based brand for its F1 campaign.
This isn't the first time the two companies will be seen together. Volkswagen entered the World Rally Championship in 2013 and immediately tasted success by winning the Drivers' and the Constructors' title in its debut season.
