Toyota TNGA Global Architecture to save fuel, production costs

All international carmakers have understood that the best way to reduce development costs and increase parts sharing among the lineup is to build a flexible, scalable platform. Toyota is the latest carmaker to adopt this production technique by unveiling the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA).


TNGA is to Toyota what MQB is to Volkswagen. TNGA will underpin at least fifty percent of all Toyota cars that the carmaker will sell globally in 2020. We already know that Toyota globally is taking a great deal of effort into making its future products aesthetically appealing and does not want to be known as a carmaker that makes boring cars. So while we expect a attract Toyota cars in the future, we can expect more model introductions that are more affordable as development costs for the product will be lesser. Not just the product though, as TNGA will reduce tooling costs at factories and flexible assembly lines will make factories more efficient.

So how exactly does TNGA benefit you? Toyota says that a range of new engines will be introduced for TNGA cars that will offer improved fuel efficiency by up to 25 percent and with increased power output of up to 15 percent. Since hybridization is a huge business in the Toyota portfolio, TNGA will be benefit cars like the next generation Prius too. The company says that hybrids will return 15 percent better fuel economy.


Moreover, TNGA cars will have a lower centre of gravity, will be lighter and have better rigidity ranging from 30 to 65 percent over the current crop of cars. This and the increased output from the new powertrains mentioned above translate to a more rewarding drive. The company hasn't given any details on the products that will get the TNGA platform first but expect information to trickle in soon.
