Audi RS3 R by MTM

Remember when MTM released a multi-stage tuning kit for the Audi RS3 back in November 2015? Well, the German tuner’s back at it again with a new and improved program that adds more power to the hot hatch’s 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine.

As if its past works on the RS3 weren’t impressive enough, this new kit promises more power and performance for the model. Kind of appropriate that we get this program not only in time for the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, but also in a climate where the high-performance hatchback segment has become as competitive as ever.

Having said that, this kit isn’t entirely new. Some of its elements were brought over from the previous program. The only difference is that this version is bigger, better, and as fans of the RS3 will surely love, more powerful than anything MTM has built for the hot hatch model.

The only downside to the kit is that it costs a lot of money. Some might be able to afford it, but with a price tag that breaks six figures, others might just opt for something in that price range. Either way, MTM isn’t sweating about this perceived complication. In it’s own mind, it has a new program for the RS3 that’s going to turn the pocket rocket into a bonafide sports car with the numbers to match its new status.

Does MTM’s new kit for the RS3 enough to persuade customers to give it a serious look? Fortunately, we won’t have to wait too long for an answer to that question. The Audi RS3 by MTM will make its debut in Geneva before the German tuner opens up shop to take orders and/or inquiries about it.

Acura NSX Type R

Despite the new 2016 Acura NSX having been somewhat outshined by the 2017 Ford GT at the 2015 edition of the North American International Auto Show, the model’s sleeves are still filled with a few more aces. The most important one will obviously be the expected Type R variant, which was somewhat officially confirmed by Ted Klaus, the chief engineer in charge of the second-generation Acura NSX. Set to arrive in late 2016 or early 2017 at the latest, the new Acura NSX Type R will probably give nightmares to the engineers in charge of the Nissan GT-R R36, which is also currently in development and should actually arrive before the NSX Type R.

The "regular" 2016 NSX puts out a total of 573 horsepower and 623 pound-feet of torque. 500 ponies and 406 pound-feet come from the mid-mounted V-6 mill, while the electric motor between the engine and transmission puts out an additional 47 horsepower adn 109 pound-feet of torque. Two motors on the front axle each deliver 36 horsepower and 54 pound-feet. With the additional power that would come with the additional of a Type R badge, the Type R should be one hell of a ride.

The 1991 to 2005 NSX spawned a Type R version about two years into the product-cycle, first as a Japan-only Honda and then as an Acura in the United States as well. With over 250 pounds of weight removed compared to the standard NSX, the Type R offered blistering track performance but a much more low-tech cabin due to its lack of air conditioning and less sound-deadening materials. The new NSX Type R will probably not be as barebones as the first generation though, with most of the performance additives coming from the improved hybrid technology sported by the model.

Updated 02/29/2016: Acura insiders recently revealed some potential plans to beef up the power output of the "regular" NSX. A Type R has yet to be confirmed officially, but a more powerful NSX may be in the works. Check out the details in the Drivetrain section below. (TheDetroitBureau)

Aston Martin DB11

Aston Martin has been relying on its VH (Vertical/Horizontal) platform since 2001, using it in all of its vehicles except the 2012 Aston Martin One-77 and the 2011 Toyota iQ-based 2011 Aston Martin Cygnet city car. That’s about to come to an end in 2016, when the Brits are set to introduce a new, lighter architecture that will include parts engineered by Mercedes’ high-performance AMG division. The new platform will also see Aston Martin vehicles receive the biturbo, 4.0-liter V-8 launched in the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT, which will be supplied to Gaydon based on a partnership with Daimler. The first Aston Martin product to benefit from these new features will be the successor to the current Aston Martin DB9, which will arrive in showrooms for the 2017 model year.

Not much is known about the grand tourer set to replace the DB9, but Aston Martin has confirmed it will be sold as the DB11. In 2014, the brand trademarked the names DB10 through DB14 and used the DB10 moniker for the bespoke 2015 Aston Martin DB10 car built for the James Bond "Spectre" movie.

Updated 02/29/2016: The first images of the new DB11 leaked online with just a few hours before the car’s official debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. (Carscoop)

Porsche 911 R

Despite being fitted with one of the best automatic transmissions ever built, the latest 911 GT3 has received a lot of heat from Porsche purists. Sure, the PDK shifts amazingly quick and it’s specifically tuned to deliver the fastest lap times on the race track, but most gearheads claim the 911 GT3 would be a lot more fun with three pedals and a stick. I couldn’t agree more.

Even though Porsche has made it clear that the manual gearbox will not return in the GT3, Stuttgart is reportedly working on a hardcore, naturally aspirated 911 with a manual transmission. According to Car and Driver, the new model will be called the 911 R and will use a powerplant closely related to the GT3’s.

The outlet also claims that the 911 R will break cover at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March and hit dealerships with a "steep price."

Not much else is known about the 911 R, but we’ve already came up with a rendering to go with the speculative review below. Stay tuned for more details. I’ll be back as soon as I find out more.

Updated 02/29/2016: The new Porsche 911 R is set to be making its world debut tomorrow at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, but the first images already leaked online. As expected, the new 911 R is nothing else but a manual 911 GT3 with no rear wing.

Ford Torture Testing 2017 Super Duty in Mobile Lab: Video

The time between a vehicle’s debut and its arrival in showrooms hosts several important parts in its development. It’s during this time that bugs are worked out, nit-picky flaws are ironed out, and initial concerns are addressed. For the 2017 Ford Super Duty, that means a barrage of testing with Ford’s pair of mobile testing labs.

The labs, basically 18-wheeler trailers with built-in equipment and expandable walls, give engineers the ability to test the pre-production Super Duty trucks as they roll off the line. The two test rigs, called the TEFP and TIPSTER, short for Transportable Environmental four poster and Transportable Instrument panel sound testing Evaluation Rig, torture-test the trucks looking for squeaks and rattles.

The TEFP is a hellish place for the truck. Not only does it shake the truck like its traveling down a dirt road, it can recreate temperatures from -20 degrees to +120 degrees Fahrenheit. As for the TIPSTER, engineers use it to test full instrument panels for squeaks and rattles. After all, there are few things more annoying than a squeaking dashboard.

“Both the TEFP and TIPSTER allow us to test and identify the root causes of squeaks and rattles in a controlled environment, whether its in the hot sun of Arizona or the frigid temperatures in Canada,” says Dave Massengill, Ford’s PVT Squeak and Rattle Engineer at the Kentucky Truck Plant.

Ford is obviously putting a lot of effort into the upcoming Super Duty – something that’s not hard to believe since it, along with the F-150, make up Ford’s best selling products. The F-Series trucks have also dominated the full-size truck segment in terms of sales, going on nearly 40 years. Ford literally can’t afford to make mistakes with these trucks.

1970 Dodge Charger Tantrum Gets Jay Leno's Attention: Video

I’ve seen a lot of cars make appearances in Jay Leno’s Garage. I’ve seen a restored 1942 Dodge Power Wagon, a 1990 Lamborghini LM002, a 1974 Datson Sunny 1200 UTE, and a 2017 Audi R8 V10 Plus. As unique as all those cars are, I don’t think they’re as unique as the latest piece of machinery found in Jay Leno’s garage.

This is a 1970 Dodge Charger Tantrum and it’s mental beyond reproach. To be clear, there’s no such thing as a Charger Tantrum model. That “Tantrum” comes by way of SpeedKore Performance, a Wisconsin-based aftermarket company that built this 1970 Charger up to such insane levels it earned the nickname “Tantrum.”

It still looks like a 1970 Charger, but SpeedKore Performance designer Sean Smith admitted that there were a few functional changes made to make it look the way it does. For instance, there’s a generous amount of carbon fiber in the body of the car, including the hood, front bumper, and fenders. The interior also gets a generous amount of the lightweight material. Speaking of the cabin, a nice hat tip is in order for that pistol-grip shifter. That’s a swell way to keep the spirit of the Charger alive.

The powertrain is where the real magic lies. According to engine builder Dave Salvaggio, the Tantrum doesn’t have a Chrysler engine, which begs the question, “well, what does it have under that lightweight carbon fiber hood?”

If you want to know the answer, you’re going to have to watch the episode. Here’s a hint: ever heard of Mercury Marine?

Drive Goes To Willow Springs To Learn About The History Of The Track: Video

Willow Springs International Raceway is considered the most important race track in Southern California. It’s not the newest track, nor is it the biggest, but it does carry with it that old-school nostalgia that these modern tracks don’t have. In this episode of Drive, host Mike Spinelli is doing double duty as he takes the Dodge Challenger Hellcat out for some track day fun around the track. But while he tries to navigate the admittedly tricky Challenger Hellcat, he also tells the story of how Willow Springs came to be.

With that, he gets help from Christian Huth, the current manager of the race track and the grandson of the colorful character who founded the track. For those who don’t know, that man was Bill Huth, considered by many as a true motorsports visionary who successfully turned what was once just a dirt road into what many believe is one of the most famous tracks in the state, let alone the most important one from a historical perspective.

The elder Huth died in May 2015 from complications related to COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). But as his grand son describes him, Bill Huth was a larger than life individual who took great pleasure in leaving a mark on anybody he came across with, even those he purposely tried to rip off. It’s a fascinating story of how the Willow Springs International Raceway came to be.

Oh, and just in case I forget, Spinelli’s still in the episode doing some mad runs on the Challenger, all while trying to properly describe the feeling of trying to coral that 707-horsepower muscle car in a track as tricky as Willow Springs. Easier said than done, right Mike?

Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse Performs Some Mean Donuts: Video

Ever wonder what it must feel like doing donuts in the fastest production car in the world? To my knowledge, I think I can count in one hand the number of times I’ve seen an actual Bugatti Veyron performing serious burnouts. There’s a reason for that. See, a set of Bugatti Veyron tires cost a little under $20,000. Since the Veyron uses special Michelin PAX tires, they can only be removed from the wheels in France in a process that reportedly costs around $70,000 to $80,000. That’s roughly $90,000 to $100,000 worth of replacement parts.

So yeah, people who own Veyrons don’t generally use them for burnouts because replacing those cars could put a serious dent in their wallets. But what happens when the tires themselves are so worn out that they have to replaced?

Well, magic happens. The folks over at DutchBugs happened to have with them a Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse World Record Car Edition. With those tires reportedly due for a change, they did what anybody would’ve done under the same situation. They took the special edition Veyron to an open area and proceeded to do some crazy burnouts that we’ll probably never get to see in our lifetimes again.

As for the young buck riding shotgun and bearing witness to arguably the most expensive donuts in history, that’s YouTube personality Gonth. For somebody who staked his claim to fame on YouTube, this is one heck of a video to have in his collection.

Exclusive: Facelifted Renault Duster launch on 3rd March

Facelifted Renault Duster

After a long wait, Renault finally took the wraps off the facelifted Duster at the 2016 Auto Expo in February. The French car maker also revealed that the car will be launched in six variants with petrol as well as diesel engine options. While the current generation model wasn't available with an automatic option, the new one will include an 'Easy-R' AMT too. The company said that the new Duster will come with evolved 'Electricals and Electronics and a new CM10 engine.

Mechanicals aside, the refreshed Duster will get cosmetic updates too. The compact SUV now gets a new face with a single slat grille up front with the Renault logo in the centre. Renault has also fitted new 'hawk-eye' headlights and silver scuff plates up front to make it look more rugged. The car showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo was fitted with gun metal finished alloy wheels. At the back, the Duster will get a redesigned bumper, LED taillights and new scuff plates.

Facelifted Renault Duster rear

The updates aren't just restricted to the exterior. On the inside, the facelifted Duster gets a large infotainment system with Bluetooth, AUX, USB connectivity and an in-built navigation system. Steering wheel, and the seats have been changed too. The India-spec Duster gains its inspiration from its Brazilian cousin that received a facelift last year.

First introduced in 2012, the Duster hasn't received a considerable update since its launch in India. Renault did bring in an AWD variant in 2014 but with a very mild interior and exterior update. This update will bring the Duster on par with competition like Hyundai Creta and will come just before Honda marks its debut with the new BR-V.

Petrol prices to drop by Rs 3.05 per litre while diesel shoots up by 50 paise from midnight

Petrol gets cheaper while Diesel becomes costlier

The Union Budget for the fiscal year of 2016-17 was announced today by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and it carried with it some news that are in favour of (and some not much so) the automobile industry. The budget called for the construction of various new roadways in the country but also mentioned that all cars will be dearer as an additional infrastructure tax will be levied for all new vehicle registrations. The new infra cess tax will vary from 1 per cent to 4 per cent depending upon the type of vehicle.

Fortunately, the end-buyer can breathe a small sigh of relief as there will be a shift in the current rate of fuel prices. The price of petrol will reduce by Rs 3.05 per litre while diesel will cost more by 50 paise. The change of rate will be effective from midnight, February 29th, all across the nation.

A similar shift in fuel prices was observed earlier on 18th February where petrol prices dropped by 32 paise while the cost of diesel went up by 28 paise.

The consistent drop in petrol price and hike in diesel can be associated to the government's attempt to bridge the overall gap between both the fuels.

The current price of petrol is Rs 56.61 per litre and for diesel is Rs 46.43 per litre. As mentioned earlier, from midnight petrol will cost Rs 53.56 per litre and Rs 46.93 per litre for diesel (all fuel figures are with respect to New Delhi rates).

2016 Honda Amaze to come with climate control as standard

2016 Honda Amaze

After being on sale for more than two years now, the Honda Amaze sedan is due for an update and its next iteration is slated to break cover on 3rd March, 2016. As part of its makeover the new Amaze is slated to get a slightly revised exterior and interior as well as an updated feature list.

Now, Cardekho has learnt that the 2016 version of the sub-4 metre sedan will come with climate control as standard across all its variants. This is the first time that climate control is being offered as standard in this segment, although all the Amaze's competition does offer the feature in their higher rung models.

2016 Honda Amaze

Similar to the automatic AC that comes with the Honda BR-V the unit on the Amaze isn't a touchscreen affair as on the City and Jazz. However, on the Amaze, it reportedly gets a 'Max Cool' button that automatically adjusts the unit to the lowest settings. The base affair doesn't get the rear defogger button beside the front demister, but it will be offered in higher variants.

There are other differences inside too. The base model of the 2016 Amaze will make do with tiny black highlights in the cabin, while higher variants will be festooned to silver and chrome highlights make the interior a livelier affair. The instrument console is similar to that on the City but the circular LCD display has been given the boot, although there are chrome rings on the console in higher variants, while the audio system now gets Bluetooth connectivity. The door panels, central tunnel, and steering wheel have been carried forward from the previous Amaze.

2016 Honda Amaze

As for the powertrain, we already know that the 2016 Amaze will feature the same engine options as its predecessor. That means that the petrol unit is still a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder engine that develops 87PS of peak power and 109Nm of peak torque. The diesel will be a 1.5-litre, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that will get 100PS of peak power and 200Nm of peak torque. The petrol will be mated to both a 5-speed manual and a VCT automatic gearbox while the diesel engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox only.

When it is launched in the country on 3rd March, expect the 2016 Honda Amaze to be priced at Rs 5.50-8.00 lakh for the petrol and Rs 6.25-8.50 lakh for the diesel variant, making it slightly more expensive than some of its competitors.

Tata GenX Nano AMT: 1,000km Long Term Review

Tata Nano AMT

Every member of the ZigWheels team is a travel bug which is one of the reasons why a petrol long term is rarely part of our fleet. But when Tata offered the GenX Nano AMT, the case was a bit different. Being a little weary of driving the Volkswagen Polo diesel in bumper-to-bumper traffic every day, I was more than happy to have the GenX Nano. The GenX Nano offered me two things that the Polo never did andndash; convenience and space.

Firstly, the small proportions of the Nano are a blessing in a city like Mumbai. Just over 3 meters in length, the Nano can easily be parked in the tightest of spots. Making the task much easier is the electronic power steering. Moreover being an AMT, I never had to worry about gear shifts which made the overall driving experience absolutely peaceful. That being said, the AMT 'box isn't the smoothest of the lot and it could have worked better with closer ratios considering the limited torque on offer. The GenX Nano continues to be powered by the same old 624cc unit twin-cylinder unit that churns out 38PS of power. The engine feels rough and has quite some vibrations while idling, however once in motion, its feels relatively smoother and less jerky.

In terms of space, the exterior is totally deceptive of what is on the inside. The front seats are well bolstered for an average sized person like me. At the back too, there is ample of leg, knee and shoulder to seat three abreast comfortably.

After a month and over 1,000km I have now started to look past the few niggles that the GenX Nano has and appreciate it for what the car is. While it works well as a city car, I would have loved to give it a go on the highway. But before I could do that, I am forced to hand over the keys to Cyrus. Over to you.

Date Acquired: January, 2016

Total km till Date: 5,651km (974km on test)

Fuel Efficiency: 13.4kmpl

Cheers: Space, Convenience

Sneers: Gearbox, Rough engine

Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire AMT Diesel: First Drive Review

Maruti-Suzuki Swift Dzire ZDi AGS

The AMT or the Automated Manual Transmission has turned out to be a boon to the Indian car industry as it is the cheapest automatic transmission out there and is a rather clever piece of kit. The AMT is basically a normal single clutch transmission that is fitted with an actuator to manage the depressing of the clutch and gearshifts. So in essence, the AMT is a manual transmission sans the clutch pedal. This provides a cost effective and value for money solution not only to the manufacturers but customers as well. For instance, the Celerio was the first car to be introduced with an AMT gearbox and the AMT model outsold the manual simply because the price difference between the manual and the AMT was negligible. But we are not here to talk about the Celerio. Today we are talking about the new Swift Dzire which is the latest Maruti-Suzuki to adopt the AMT gearbox

Exterior and Design: rating_3.0_rating

Well, for starters, the Dzire is the first diesel Maruti to get its Auto Gearshift Technology (just Maruti's way of saying AMT). But let's start from the top. The ZDi AGS looks identical to its manual sibling, the AGS badge on the tailgate notwithstanding. The slightly oddball-ish looks are intact with the chrome front grille, the sweptback headlamps, the floating roofline and the barely protruding boot.

Interiors and space: rating_3.5_rating

Inside too the story is the same, the cabin is typical of the top of the line Swift Dzire as the AGS is only available with the ZDi trim. The interior is finished in tones of beige and black with thin wood finishes on the dashboard and the door panels. The rear kneeroom is decent but proves to be inadequate for the generously proportioned and seating three is a no,no. The boot space on the other hand is decent but does eat into the rear kneeroom.

Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire ZDi AGS Features and Equipment

Features and equipment: rating_4.0_rating

In terms of convenience features, the Dzire comes loaded with keyless entry and keyless start along with a climate control system. The infotainment system with USB and Bluetooth connectivity dominates the dashboard. You also get rear parking sensors and electrically operated and folding ORVMs. Though a reversing camera is still missing.

Engine and performance: rating_4.0_rating

The engine is the same 1.3-litre 4-cylinder turbo diesel unit that does duty on the manual car as well. The engine dishes out 75PS of max power at 4,000rpm and 190Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. The engine is mated to a 5-speed AMT gearbox. On the move the engine feels refined and Maruti has done a good job of the NVH as well. In addition, it is a peppy little engine and an eager nature.

Ride and ease of driving: rating_4.0_rating

The suspension setup is the same as the old car. Though the car is sprung on the stiffer side, it doesn't feel uncomfortable or jolty even on the nastier undulations. The visibility though is a on the lesser side as you can't see the corners of the bonnet. But the highlight of this Dzire is the AMT gearbox. The exclusion of the clutch pedal makes life so much easier at the wheel. Yes, the gearshifts are a bit jerky simply because there is no clutch to ride and it is a tad slow at sedate speeds but yet there is no taking away from the sheer convenience it offers. I drove the car over the past two days in bumper to bumper traffic and came out the other side with my left kneecap intact and no pain to report. Though its slow shifting nature can make overtaking a bit of a bother but can be tackled if you just calculate your shifts right especially in manual mode. Also, there isn't a sport mode on this gearbox so spirited driving is best left to manual mode.

Maruti-Suzuki Swift Dzire ZDi AGS handling

Handling and braking: rating_3.5_rating

The slightly stiff suspension find a fine balance between a good ride and decent handling. The car is quite flickable and there is a fair bit of feedback from the steering as well. In traffic too changing lanes isn't an issue as long as you're mindful of the rear of the car. The brakes too provide good feel but the AMT does make the braking slightly unpredictable in D mode as downshifts are no longer in your control.

Price and efficiency: rating_3.0_rating

The Dzire was never quite low on the price spectrum to begin with and the AMT costs Rs 8.3lakh ex-showroom Delhi which makes it the most expensive sub 4-metre sedan in the country. But what does work in its favour, is the AMT gearbox and the claimed fuel efficiency of 26.5kmpl despite being an automatic.

Verdict: rating_3.5_rating

All in all, the Dzire is a decent car to live with. The brand itself does wonders to ensue buyer confidence. Though it doesn't look as good as we'd hoped and the room in the rear bench is also limited. But then looks are subjective and it does offer a host of features like climate control and Bluetooth telephony, not to mention that it also comes with ABS with EBD. In addition this AGS version comes with an AMT which promises to be as efficient as the manual well, because it is essentially the same gearbox. It also drives well and is supremely convenient in traffic. So it does make quite a case for itself with the price being the only major concern.
