McLaren 570S is first in Sports series range

McLaren 570S front action

McLaren has captured the imagination of the modern Supercar/Hypercar fan with the highly competent 650S and P1 but the British manufacturer wants to expand and reach out to a wider audience. It's still a sports car though and the wider audience is still a relative term. The first of this Sports Series range is the 570S, and going by McLaren's top down approach, future models in the Sports Series will be watered down versions of the this car.

The 570S as the name suggests, packs in 570PS of power. It's pumped out of the 3.8-litre V8 that employs two turbochargers to give 600Nm of torque. The Sports car can do the 0-100kmph sprint in just 3.2 seconds and 0-200kmph in just 9.5 seconds. The 570S is then clearly gunning for the Mercedes AMG GT, the new Audi R8 and the Porsche 911.

While the engine remains the same as its stablemates, 30 percent of the engine components have been redesigned. It bears striking resemblance to its elder siblings too with a clear family design language visible. The 570S is extremely light and boasts of a power to weight ratio of 434PS per tonne.

McLaren 570S rear static

Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard on the 570S it being the top of the line variant in the sport series but expect the lesser variants to get them in the options list. The multispoke forged alloy wheels get custom made Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres - 225/35/R19 on the front and 285/35/R20 on the rear.

The carbon fibre Mono Cell chassis weighs just 80kg and the overall dry weight of the car is just 1313kg. The McLaren is quite efficient too, at 10.85kmpl is exempt from the EU gas guzzler tax. This while the car is capable of doing a top speed of 328kmph is commendable.

Ford Figo Aspire vs Tata Zest vs Hyundai Xcent Spec Comparison

Ford Figo, Tata Zest and Hyundai Xcent

The sub-4 metre sedan class of cars have been observing the most movement in recent years, especially since the time manufacturers have started getting excise duty cuts on these cars. And to make the most of this benefit, manufacturers have been bringing in new offerings in this segment. The latest to be unveiled and set to enter is the Ford Figo Aspire, but where exactly does it stand as far as its competition is concerned.

Ford Figo Aspire

Engine: When it makes its way to the market, the Ford Figo Aspire will be launched with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol unit that will make 70PS of peak power and 102Nm of peak torque. In comparison, the Hyundai Xcent makes 83PS and 113Nm while the Tata Zest makes the most power and torque at 90PS and 140Nm. In diesel form the Ford Figo Aspire will sport a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder mill that makes 90PS and 204Nm. Meanwhile its rivals in discussion, the Xcent makes 72PS and 180Nm and the Zest makes 75PS and 190Nm. Now keeping in mind that it is a diesel and the fact that it boasts of better power and torque than its rivals, the diesel trim will probably be the one that brings the number for Ford. While all cars come mated to a five-speed gearbox, the Zest has a diesel AMT on offer while the Xcent comes with an automatic option in the petrol variant. Ford hasn't revealed any plans of brining in an automatic just as yet.

Tata Zest

Features: Aside from looks, space and efficiency, buyers of this class of cars pay equal attention to the features on offer. The Xcent has quite a comprehensive list of features in that regard with features like keyless entry, button start, Electric folding ORVMs and rear view camera with parking sensors among other things. It also gets USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity. The Tata Zest on the other hand gets projector headlamps, Daytime Running Lamps, Touch-screen Display and in terms of safety it gets Electronic Brakeforce Distribution aside from ABS. Well aware of the number of features its competition offers, Ford will have to load the Figo Aspire with a long list of features as well. It will come equipped with Voice-Activated SYNC system that allows you to control apps, music and your phone. And if other products from Ford are anything to go by, the Aspire will come well equipped. In fact, the top of the line Figo will have both driver and passenger airbags combined with a host of passive safety features like built in side impact protection and crumple zones.

Hyundai Xcent

Interiors and Space: On the inside, the Ford Figo Aspire will borrow the dashboard from the sub-4 metre SUV EcoSport and it sure does look good. With its prominent V design, the Aspire's dashboard houses an infotainment screen and an array of buttons with phone and media controls. As opposed to the Xcent and the Zest, the overall layout of the dashboard is better designed. In terms of quality though, it might just fall second to the Hyundai.

Keeping in mind that much of the interiors in the Ford Figo Aspire have been borrowed from the EcoSport, space is one aspect that is currently in doubt. But to make a fair statement, the wheelbase of most cars in this class is more or less the same thanks to which enough knee room even at the back. The front seats of the Ford Figo Aspire though have been sculpted in order to create more space at the back, something that a lot of manufacturers have started doing off late.

Ford Figo Aspire

Efficiency and Price: The Hyundai Xcent boasts of an ARAI claimed efficiency of 19.2kmpl for the petrol and 24.4kmpl for the diesel while the Zest claims 17.6kmpl and 23kmpl respectively. Ford too will have to ensure that the Figo Aspire's efficiency is promising for it to succeed in the Indian market. Aside from the efficiency the price will also have a part to play. And that especially with cars like the Tata Zest starting from as low as Rs 4.86 lakh going right up to Rs 8.07 lakh for the top-end AMT diesel variant. The Hyundai Xcent is priced between Rs 4.96 lakh to Rs 7.74 lakh. Ford too will have to price the Figo Aspire in the Rs 4.75 lakh to Rs 8 lakh range if they want to compete on the sales charts with such able rivals.

Dani Pedrosa's Career Could Be In Jeopardy Because Of Mysterious Arm Injury

Dani Pedrosa’s mysterious arm injury has everyone baffled and the worst part is, nobody knows exactly what’s going on. It’s come to the point that his racing career could be in trouble.

Pedrosa indicated as much after the season-opening Qatar GP, admitting that the problem has actually plagued him since last season. He said he tried racing through it and even went through an operation to try to address the problem, but none of the treatments and procedures have worked. So Pedrosa was stuck with two options: continue racing through it or shut it down completely until the problem the injury heals, if it does at all.

Pedrosa’s injury has cast another dark cloud on Repsol Honda, which was vying to win its fourth straight MotoGP constructor’s title. Obviously, the team’s championship aspirations are now nowhere near as important as Pedrosa’s long-term health. But it’s still a problem for the team that needs to be addressed as soon as possible so that it can get back to the thick of the championship race. It’s already behind the proverbial eight ball against rivals Yamaha and Ducati and it doesn’t have a whole lot of turnaround before the US Grand Prix arrives in the middle of April.

You can call it a crisis or an unfortunate development, but it’s looking more and more like Repsol Honda will have to contend this season without the services of one of its riders. It’s a tough blow for the team, but nothing compared to what Pedrosa is going through.

Hopefully, his arm injury heals in due time and this is one race that everybody will be rooting for him to win. It would be a shame if he can’t race again because of this issue.

Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang Will Deliver At Least 520 HP

It’s been more than four months since the Shelby GT350 broke cover at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and Ford has yet to reveal the actual output of the muscle car. However, as the on-sale date (slated for the fourth quarter of this year) approaches, more details are starting to surface. The latest info surrounding the GT350 comes straight from Shelby brand manager Jim Owens, who was on hand to chat with enthusiasts at the Texas World Speedway, where Ford showcased the GT350 this weekend. Owens divulged several juicy bits about the GT350, including the fact that the 5.2-liter V-8 will make more than 100 horsepower per liter.

That’s at least 520 horses, which is 20 horsepower more than Ford’s initial claim of "more than 500 horsepower." Owens also said the redline will be set at 8,250 rpm and that the car will be a "relative performance value," which could mean a sticker of around $50,000. Expect production numbers to be in the Boss 302 range for the GT350 and 302 Laguna Seca range for the GT350R, he added, according to Mustang6G.

Lastly, Owens confirmed the GT350 will also get a race version under the GT350S moniker. He didn’t provide a launch date for it, but it’s likely to arrive in 2016.

McLaren 570S Coupe

Only two years after it launched the P1, its first supercar since the F1, and twelve months after it replaced the MP4-12C with the 650S, McLaren introduced the 570S Coupe at the 2015 New York Auto Show. Slotted below the 650S, the 570S gives McLaren access to a new segment and brings the company’s race-derived technologies to a new audience. With the 570S Coupe, McLaren adds the Porsche 911 Turbo to the roster of sports cars it will wage war against, and launches its new Sports Series family, which will expand to include at least five models.

Although it the smallest and least powerful, road-going McLaren yet, the 570S Coupe promises to be as exciting as any sports car coming from Woking. The coupe shares its DNA with both the 650S and P1, while also using a range of race-bred technologies that already debuted in previous models. In short, the 570S Coupe isn’t a lesser McLaren, but the company’s attempt to make its products available to a wider clientele and at a more affordable price. It’s part of McLaren’s recently announced plans to expand globally, and, by the looks of things, this new strategy is off to a great starts thanks to the 570S Coupe. Read more about it below.

Porsche Panamera Edition

Though it didn’t receive the warmest of welcomes from Porsche faithful when it debuted in 2010, the Panamera has become an accepted cog in the carmaker’s wheel. Between it and Porsche’s SUVs, the German brand makes the money it needs to fund awesome rigs like the 918 and the 911 GT3. For the 2016 model year, Porsche has added a new version of the Panamera that it has dubbed the “Edition.” Despite its weird name, the Panamera Edition adds a lot of value at a price that is only slightly north of the base model’s MSRP.

With tons of standard features and only a slight price hike, this is likely to be a hot seller in the next year. However, while this all looks great compared to the base Panamera, does this new Edition trim match up well against the likes of the BMW 740i or the Audi A8?

Video: UK Rider Clocked Doing 148 MPH By Police, Gets Cited For Dangerous Driving

As a motorcycle rider, it’s always easy to rev the throttle a little tighter when you’re out on the open road. Often times, you get to speed up and enjoy the momentary thrill, but there are the rare times when you get a little too excited and you end up unintentionally setting a record. A UK rider named Paul Roberts did just that when he was recorded by police cameras recording what law enforcement authorities believe to be the highest ever recorded speed on UK roads by a rider with a pillion.

Numerous newspapers across the pond are reporting that Roberts managed to hit 148 mph on his Kawasaki ZZR1400. Normally, such feats would be cause for celebration. But Roberts’ attempt to bend the space-time continuum ended up with him being booked by the police and banned from driving for 15 months.

It’s not the kind of record-setting attempt you want to see, especially one that’s done on a public road like the M11 in Essex, England, so Roberts deserves the punishment handed to him after he himself admitted to dangerous driving in front of a judge at the Chelmsford Crown Court a fortnight ago. In addition to the 15-month ban, Roberts was also ordered to serve 120 hours of community service and pay £460 ($680) in fees.

I’ve always been particularly prickly when it comes to road safety. Past experiences have contributed largely to my stance on that particular issue. So I’m glad that Roberts got what was coming to him. But I have to admit, a little part of me was impressed that he managed to hit that speed, even as he weaved in and out of traffic. That takes a particularly large set of cajones to do something like that.

So here’s what I’ll say: the next time Paul Roberts wants to rev the throttle of his ZZR1400 a little tighter, I hope he does it on a race track where he can go nuts doing it. I might even pay to see him do that.

Cadillac CT6

After years of patent leaks, spy shots, and endless rumors about its feasibility, the Cadillac CT6 flagship sedan will finally become a reality. That’s the news within the ranks at Cadillac after a high-level source told Autoblog that the RWD, flagship, luxury sedan is being developed in time to make its debut at the New York Auto Show in April 2015. That’s still a long ways away, so it should give Cadillac enough time to prepare its long-awaited answer to the likes of the Mercedes S-Class, the Audi A8, and the BMW 7 Series.

Autoblog is also reporting certain design elements of the Elmiraj Coupe Concept we saw at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance will make their way to the CT6 sedan. While that may be true, we also know GM global design boss Ed Welburn says the CT6 will not be entirely based on the Elmiraj concept. In that same interview Welburn gave, he specifies by saying the CT6 will be a more evolutionary design step. “It’ll be different and it will certainly stand out in the portfolio, but you won’t see a real shift in direction.”

If anything, the company needs to be on its A game in developing the CT6. Last we checked, the S-Class, A8, and 7 Series were all heavyweights of the luxury sedan market. The 2015 S-Class, in particular, was a dramatic improvement from its own predecessor, re-validating Mercedes’ place in the pecking order of the segment. Cadillac will definitely have a lot of pressure on its hands, although the Caddy source did tell Autoblog that the company is prepared to embrace the challenge.

At this point, we’re holding our judgment on that one, at least not until we see the CT6 in the flesh in April 2015. You still have time on your hands, Cadillac. You better make the most out of it if the CT6 wants to live up to the hype.

Updated 03/31/2015: The new Cadillac CT6 should be unveiled in a couple of hours at the 2015 New York Auto Show, but until then Cadillac decided to drop a new teaser image for the upcoming luxury sedan.

Kondo Brothers Launch Bicycle Whees That Will Cost You $16K Per Set

There are a lot of things you can buy with $16,000. You can buy a high-powered sportsbike, a high-end cruiser, or you can even buy, as Top Gear calls it, a “reasonably priced car.” But what if I told you that for $16K, or $15,800 to be exact, you’ll have enough money to buy a pair of bicycle wheels without expecting any change from it. The truth really is stranger than fiction because these wheels actually exist and is being sold at that price by Japanese engineers Kondo Machine.

Brothers Nobuo and Yutaka Kondo run the 30-employee shop that not only produces these wheels, but also engineers specialized parts for Rolls-Royce jet engines and machines parts for Toyota. But I’m not here to talk about those items; I’m here for the Gokiso wheels that the Kondo brothers say will provide an “incomparable ride” provided you’re willing to spend for them at a price that can buy you a Ford Fiesta. Not a replica, or a scale kit, mind you. An actual Ford Fiesta.

Before you snicker at the sheer absurdity of the price attached to these wheels, let’s take a step back for a moment and try to understand why Kondo Machine is charging this much for these wheels.

The wheels are apparently made from the same carbon material that’s currently being used in the aviation industry, making them more rigid and more durable than any kind of bicycle wheel in the market today. The Kondo brothers even claim that that the Gokiso’s design is patterned after a shock absorbing structure that allows the wheels to absorb whatever vibration it receives from the road. Then there’s the surface of the brakes, which according to the Kondo boys, is covered with basalt fiber, a material that’s supposedly more resistant to heat than anything of its kind today.

The materials used on the wheels do sound impressive, that much I’ll concede. But I still can’t see spending that much money on wheels, especially when a legitimate alternative is an actual car.

Continue reading to read more about Kondo Machine’s Gokiso wheels.

New McLaren 570S Coupe Unveiled Ahead of New York

Originally scheduled for debut at the upcoming New York Auto Show, McLaren has dropped cover on its new 570S Coupe. Presented as part of the entry-level, three-tier Sports Series line-up, the 570S Coupe is aimed at tackling models like the Audi R8 V10 and Porsche 911 Turbo S, with pricing expected somewhere in the $150,000-$200,000 range.

Output from its mid-mounted, twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V-8 engine is rated at 562 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Thirty percent of the components on the powerplant are new, while a seven-speed sequential-shift gearbox sends power to the rear wheels. McLaren claims a best-in-segment power-to-weight ratio. The 2,895-pound sports car is capable of reaching 62 mph from a standstill in 3.2 seconds and 124 mph in 9.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 204 mph. The engine also delivers 25.5 mpg, which means the 570S is exempt from the U.S. gas-guzzler tax.

Carbon ceramic brakes, a range of new forged alloy wheels, and P Zero Corsa tires all come standard. The suspension is also new, using independent adaptive dampers with front and rear anti-roll bars and dual wishbones. It has three settings: Normal, Sport and Track

The exterior showcases McLaren’s latest design philosophy, featuring a “shrinkwrapped” body that optimizes downforce. The carbon-fiber MonoCell II chassis was designed for easier ingress and egress, while still offering high levels of rigidity. Aluminum body panels keep curb weight low.

The interior has leather upholstery, increased storage space, a TFT digital instrument cluster, a seven-inch IRIS touchscreen, Bluetooth, and Sirius satellite radio. Upgraded infotainment and trim materials are available.

Stay tuned for a full review.

Honda S660

A spiritual successor to the Honda S600 and the Pininfarina-designed Honda Beat, the S660 Kei-roadster has gone on sale in Japan. The petite model was previewed by a funky-looking concept car at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, so reaching mass-production status in under two years is probably a first, even for Honda.

Even though it has a retractable roof, which normally adds weight, the tiny mid-engine roadster is part of the Kei car category in Japan, weighing less than 2,000 pounds and measuring under 11.2 feet in length. Being part of that special category also means that the 660cc engine has its displacement restricted to that figure by law, but unconfirmed reports suggest that a hotter model sold outside Japan may benefit from a turbocharged, 1.0-liter engine, with its handling developed in cooperation with Mugen.

Honda S660 baby sports car goes on sale in Japan

Honda S660 roadster front action

Honda has finally put the S660 on sale in Japan a year and a half after unveiling it for the first time at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. The S660 conforms to Japanese Kei car standards but makes sure that while you are buying an entry level car, you don't miss out of the fun of motoring in style.

Kei Cars, for those who are unfamiliar, is similar to the sub 4-metre cars on sale in India. In Japan, these cars are restricted to a length of 3.4 metres, width of 1.48 metres and a height of 2 metres. No wonder then that we see plenty of oddly shaped Tall-boy hatchbacks from Japan. There is also restriction on engine capacity and power andndash; 660cc and 64PS.

The S660 as a result conforms to these restrictions but places a mid mounted engine sending power to the rear wheels making for a light and fun roadster set up. Weight distribution is rear biased 45:55 and the engine is an inline-three with a turbocharger bolted on. Gearbox choices are a six-speed manual or a continuously variable transmission. There is also a Concept special edition limited to a run of 660 units but Honda aims to sell 800 units of the standard car every month.

The S660 will be sold in six colours, gets a fabric roof, two tone interior with the driver and passenger seat is available in different shades. Brake based torque vectoring keeps the S660 in check but gives its RWD playfulness some leeway.

DC Avanti launch on April 15

DC Avanti

Even when it was first unveiled at the 2012 Auto Expo, the DC Avanti turned a lot of heads. And now the date is out, the DC Avanti, India's first true sportscar is scheduled to be launched on April 15. Manufactured by DC Design, the Avanti is a mid-engined sportscar that has been built to tackle Indian road conditions. And its overall dimensions reflect exactly that. The DC Avanti is 4,550mm long, 1,965mm wide and 1,200mm in height, which is considerably higher than any of the Lamborghinis or Ferraris. Despite being a sportscar in the DC Avanti won't really be bothered about scraping the underbelly thanks to a 170mm ground clearance.

Based on a box section space frame, the DC Avanti sports a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 250PS and 241Nm of torque. The power transmitted with the help of a six-speed manual transmission. The car connects the road with the help of massive 20-inch wheels. Braking duties are performed by 330mm disc up front and 295mm discs at the back. To absorb the undulations on the road, DC has fitted the Avanti with a double wishbone type suspension with coil springs on all four corners.

The DC Avanti, the first sportscar entirely built in India, doesn't quite have a competition as yet and is expected to be priced around Rs 35 lakh.

New 2016 Audi A4 spied

New 2016 Audi A4 front headlamp and grille

The current Audi A4 has been with us for a good few years now and while it is not a bad looking vehicle as such, it could certainly do with a fresh update. The new 2016 Audi A4, slated for a global unveil at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor show has been spied inside and out showcasing a new design language and direction for the luxury German manufacturer.

New 2016 Audi A4 spied centre console

These new pictures reveal the new Audi A4 will come with an aggressive design for the headlights that feature LED turning signals and daytime running lights. We can also take a closer look at the radiator grille that's going be larger and sharper than on the current model just like the ones seen on the new Audi TT or the new Audi R8. In fact, we think most Audi visual updates will be styled to follow the design language trend that has been set by the sports car duo from the German manufacturer.

On the interior front, the Audi A4 will get a completely restyled centre console with more prominent audio functions than ever before. The Audi A4 will also feature a slide up screen like the one found on the A3 and a new command module for the climate control system. The new Audi A4 will also feature updates on the gear knob and a set of new dials.

New 2016 Audi A4 spied dashboard

The new 2016 Audi A4 is set to ride on the second generation MLB platform and will be around 100 kg lighter than its predecessor. The engine range will include diesel, petrol and hybrid power plants with power ranging from 120PS to 330PS with some models like the e-Tron getting additional power from its electrical power packs.

New Ford Mustang to be launched in India in 2015

Ford Mustang to be launched in India

The Ford Mustang will officially make its debut in India in 2014 with an all-new right hand drive version for the first time in history. The new 2015 Mustang that was revealed in late 2013 is going to feature many firsts for the Mustang. For the first time, the Mustang will be available with independent rear suspension and for the first time will the Mustang be officially available in right hand drive.

The big news though is the return of the turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine to the Mustang family. Last seen in the third generation Mustang, the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine makes a return this time around with the highly acclaimed 2.0-litre Ecoboost motor capable of producing over 300PS. The base model variant of the Mustang though will be offered with a conventional V6 engine.

For the purists though, Ford will still offer the 5.0-litre V8 producing about 400PS. Although uncertain at this point, the more powerful Shelby version of the Mustang, including the legendary GT350 and GT500 and their respective variation will also make their way to India in the future. Expect the Mustang to cost as little as Rs 45 lakhs for an entry level version and upto Rs 55 lakhs for a full blooded V8 version. The Mustang will most certainly become one of the most popular sportcars in India if launched appealing to both the purists and the fans to the car in general.

The Mustang will be the forth car that Ford will launch in India this year. Ford's opening salvo will be the Figo Aspire compact sedan followed by the new Figo hatchback and the new Endeavour SUV. The Ford Mustang while a small volumes product will certainly go a long long way in establishing the Ford brand in India considering the fact that the 'Stang will be the first ever muscle car to be officially sold here.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio diesel spied

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to introduce a diesel variant of its new Maruti Suzuki Celerio small car. The Maruti Celerio is the cheapest automatic car in India which comes with the automatic manual transmission (AMT) gearbox. This small hatch from Maruti's stable has been spotted at the carmaker's stockyard at its Manesar facility and first images of the same have hit the web.

The highlight of the Celerio will be the 800cc twin-cylinder diesel engine which has been developed internally by the company in India, unlike the 1.3-litre Multijet which it outsources from Fiat. The two-cylinder diesel engine is expected to churn out 52PS of power and 150Nm of torque and deliver fuel-efficiency figures of nearly 30kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio petrol

Currently, the Maruti Celerio is powered by a three-cylinder K-series 1.0-litre petrol driven engine which produces a maximum power of 67PS and a peak torque of 90Nm. The petrol Celerio is offered in a five-speed manual transmission model and in an automatic transmission model. With the addition of the diesel engine, the sales for the hatchback are likely to go up, though, we are not sure yet if the diesel version will get the AMT gearbox.

There are no changes expected on the exterior except for the DDiS badges at the sides and the rear. The Celerio diesel like the petrol, will be available in LDi, VDi and ZDi trims. This upcoming diesel hatch will also get features such as dual front airbags, ABS, alloy wheels and a music system with steering mounted controls.
