We've appreciated the practicality of the cross hatchback segment for the Indian market but the cars themselves have been slow sellers. Only the Etios Cross to an extent has managed to make some kind of inroads and the Avventura was a far more serious attempt at this segment than its rivals. Now Hyundai has its crosshatch entering the fray, the i20 Active. It is based on the popular Elite i20 hatchback, and that gives the Hyundai an advantage over its rivals. Let's find out how it stacks up in a specifications comparison.
Engines, transmissions and efficiency:
Hyundai has carried forward the same engines from the Elite i20 but to compensate for the added weight of the i20 Active and to boost its sporting credentials, the Korean carmaker has tweaked gear ratios.
Among the petrols, the Hyundai has the 1.2-litre mill developing 83PS of power and 115Nm of torque. It is mated to a five speed manual transmission like its competitors. The Etios Cross comes with a choice of two petrol engines, a 1.2-litre 80PS/104Nm unit and a 1.5-litre 90PS/132Nm unit. The later one is a lot more potent and can give its competition a run for their money. Fiat meanwhile is offering only the 1.4-litre 90PS/115Nm petrol mill.
Among the diesels, where there will be the real tussle on the sales front, the i20 Active has the 1.4-litre 90PS/220Nm diesel mated to a six speed manual transmission. The Etios cross and Avventura get five speed units. Powering the Etios Cross is a fairly underpowered engine at least on paper. With just 68PS/170Nm from the 1.4-litre unit, it is far from numbers posted by the Active and the Avventura. The Fiat has the most power at 93PS but the Active we presume will be quicker off the line due to the higher torque.

Size and Space:
Being hatchbacks that have to be under the four metre mark, the i20 Active and the Avventura are stretched to the limit, falling just millimeters short of the line, but he Etios Cross is smaller by a good 100mm. It also rides lower. The Etios Cross gets 15 inch wheels to the 14 inchers on the Etios Liva and that gives it a 174mm ground clearance. Not as purposeful as the taller springs in the i20 Active and the Avventura. With 190mm and 205mm respectively, the two can easily ride over the worst of roads without the worry of scrapping their underbelly.

Price:
The Hyundai i20 Active like all Hyundais, has a lot of equipment that's missing in the other two cars. Parking cameras and cornering lamps, LED DRLs, memory for your music and a lot more. That makes it pricier than the Etios Cross and the Avventura. Since Hyundai has a popular donor car in the Elite i20, the company is confident to sell 3,000 units of the i20 Active at the price the company is commanding. These prices mentioned are introductory prices and are likely to go up depending on the response.
