Porsche Confirms Adding Seventh Model To Its Lineup

Porsche chief Matthias Muller today confirmed the brand is working on plans for a seventh model series. Speaking at the Porsche’s annual meeting in Stuttgart, Germany, Muller said a new model will be added to the Porsche lineup "in the near future," adding that "there are already promising plans, but no board decision yet."

Muller didn’t go into details about what kind of model is on the drawing board, which leaves plenty of room for speculation. According to past reports, there are three possible scenarios. One is a mid-engined supercar slotted below the 918 Spyder, another is a smaller-than-the-Panamera sedan, and the third, which is intriguing, says Porsche could build a competitor for the Tesla Model S.

Which of the three is more likely remains a mystery in the meantime, and it seems Porsche is in no hurry to reveal additional info. "There is no urgency whatsoever here," Muller stressed, adding that the brand will focus on its successful "derivative strategy for the existing model series" for now. So don’t expect the seventh Porsche series to arrive earlier than 2018.

Meanwhile, Porsche is apparently preparing to roll out new versions of existing models. "This year we have already made people sit up and take notice with the Cayman GT4 and the 911 GT3 RS. And you can expect further highlights from us in the coming months," Muller added.
