Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet

When it unveiled the new E-Class at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz confirmed what we already knew: that the midsize sedan looks like a smaller S-Class (or a larger C-Class if you prefer). The redesigned four-door also offered us precious hints about upcoming vehicles from the E-Class lineup, helping us render future products such as the Mercedes-AMG E63 and the E-Class Coupe. Having already speculated what those two models might bring to the table, we also created a rendering of the fourth member of the E-Class family, the Cabriolet.

Set to debut sometime in 2017 and arrive in U.S. dealerships for the 2018 model year, the E-Class Cabriolet will share styling cues with its Coupe sibling. However,a big change compared to its predecessor will occur under the skin. Unlike the previous model, the new E-Class Cabriolet will share underpinnings with the brand-new E-Class sedan, which rides on a rear-wheel drive architecture, dubbed MRA, that’s lighter and extremely flexible. This is a big deal for the midsize drop-top, which previously sat on the same platform as the C-Class, making it rather short and cramped compared to its competitors.

Very little is known about the E-Class Cabriolet at this point, and the first prototypes haven’t been tested on public roads until April 2016, but using what we already know about the sedan, we have put together a speculative rendering about Mercedes’ upcoming premium drop-top.

Updated 04/06/2016: Our spy photographers caught the upcoming E-Class Convertible out for a first testing session. The Convertible version is expected to be unveiled 6 months after the coupe version, most likely sometime in early 2017.
