Nissan has finally introduced a second generation to its full-sized Titan pickup truck. New for 2016, the Titan XD bridges the gap between the half-ton Titan (a 2017 model) and the traditional heavy-duty contenders from Ford, GM, and Ram. A high-strength frame supports an all-new body and the highly anticipated 5.0-liter Cummins V-8 turbodiesel. This marks the first major update to the Titan pickup since its initial debut in 2004. Only small changes to the interior and a slight restyling of the exterior have kept the truck from complete stagnation. Otherwise, the Titan’s first generation soldiered through a decade nearly unchanged.
The Titan is all-new from the ground up. Nissan offers both the regular-duty Titan and the more robust Titan XD. While both trucks will look similar, the Titan XD Crew Cab comes ready to tow 12,314 pounds and haul 2,091 pounds in its bed. Ratings for the Single Cab version are even higher. These numbers also comply with the new SAE J2807 towing standards. That means the tuck is certified to haul and tow what Nissan says it can. No over-zealous promises here.
The standard Titan will be offered with a V-6 and V-8 gasoline engine, but the Titan XD comes only with the V-8 gasoline and V-8 Cummins turbodiesel. Nissan has yet to release any information on the V-6 engine, but the V-8 is a heavily updated version of the 5.6-liter Endurance V-8 found in the current Titan pickup. It makes 390 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque thanks to direct fuel injection and variable valve timing. The Cummins is the engine frequent towers will crave. It cranks out 310 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque.
The new Titan XD offers a host of convenience upgrades as well. Nissan’s fantastic Around View Monitor system is included, along with a unique in-bed, removable storage system, and a cabin with expanded storage spots and ergonomic controls. A full suite of driver aids further pushes the Titan XD into modern times.
