Unveiled in December 2013, the sixth-generation Mustang introduced not only a new design language, but also a brand-new platform that features an independent rear suspension for the first time since the pony was launched half a century ago. It also received a revamped interior with classic cues and an updated engine lineup that included a turbocharged, 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine. The sixth-gen car also became the first Mustang to be sold in European Ford dealerships. For 2015, the Blue Oval launched the Shelby GT350, the first performance-oriented version of the new muscle car. In 2016, a set of spy shots confirmed that Ford is also working on a more powerful Shelby GT500.
The test mule was spotted outside Ford’s Dearborn development facility in Michigan sporting a number of features that are different from those seen on the GT350. This leads us to believe that a more powerful version of the sixth-gen Mustang is in the making. Not much is known about the car as of this writing, but there are numerous rumors to run by, speaking of a turbocharged engine with more than 700 horsepower and a limited production run.
The launch date is also a mystery, but the new GT500 could make its public debut at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show in January. If this proves to be true, the nameplate will return after a three-year hiatus. Find out more about it in our speculative review below and stay tuned for updates.
