The BMW 5 Series is one of those cars whose reputation precedes them. “Oh, you drive a 5 Series?” your neighbor asks. “I guess he’s finally made the big time,” they’ll say when you turn your back. Yep, BMW’s premium luxury sedan for the masses has an undeniable swagger about it that has become a coveted status symbol. The best part: the BMW didn’t achieve its desirability by being flashy or ostentatious. No, the 5 Series has quietly secured its position at the top by working weekends and overtime.
BMW has gifted the 5 Series with countless variations over the years, including diesel models, high-performance M models, and even family friendly wagons. It’s that, the venerable wagon, that we’re looking at now, and it appears BMW has something new up its sleeve.
Our spy photographers have captured a disguised 5 Series Wagon, otherwise know as the Touring model, romping around the Nürburgring. Its bodywork may still be covered in swirly camo, but its outline is unmistakable. Through that, we can see the styling – at least on this test mule – hasn’t drastically changed over the current car. However, rumors are brewing that everything underneath is getting completely revamped.
BMW is said to have an all-new platform to underpin the new 5 Series. Made with an extensive amount of aluminum and lightweight, high-strength steel, the chassis will cut weight and added rigidity. This will not only help with fuel economy, but will also help the BMW handle like… well, like a BMW should. It’s expected the new generation 5 Series will hit U.S. shores for the 2017 model year.
There’s plenty more to discuss, so keep reading for more information.
