Volkswagen has confirmed to Zigwheels that the next generation Tiguan will come to India in 2016. The SUV will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September but the company has already chalked out plans for the premium SUV.
The new Tiguan will be in its second generation and for this iteration, Volkswagen has planned it on the flexible MQB platform that will underpin new generations of everything from the Polo to the Passat to Audis and Skodas. That helps Volkswagen give the Tiguan a seven seat configuration too unlike the current model which is a five seater only.
Powering the Tiguan will most possibly be a 2.0-litre TDI mill from the Volkswagen Passat. In the Passat it is available in three tune levels andndash; 150PS, 190PS and a twin turbo 240PS. We expect either of the single turbo units here. The gearbox choices are a six-speed manual or DSG, the latter would be the most likely one for India sending power to the front wheels or all fours in the 4WD Tiguan. The Tiguan is touted to have outstanding offroading ability and could come with fancy off-road systems for the segment.
Unlike the Passat which will be the premium sedan showcasing the brand's technological supremacy, the Tiguan could be more of a premium yet functional offering. It will be priced around the Rs 25-30 lakh mark and that's a price Indian carbuyers are willing to pay for a premium well styled and capable SUV, case in point being the Toyota Fortuner and Hyundai Santa Fe. The Tiguan will be a more premium offering if not as big as these and will go head on against the likes of the Audi Q3, Mercedes GLA and BMW X1.
