Yohan Poonawalla's passion for cars is a well-known affair. He lives and breathes cars. But the Pune-based billionaire industrialist is quite disturbed these days. Reason? Poonawalla's 2011 Porsche Cayenne Turbo caught fire on Bandra's Hill Road a few days ago.
His driver, Shekhar Chivate, was in the car and had a miraculous escape when he was alerted by onlookers about the smoke emanating from under the hood of the car. Within a few minutes, the car was burnt down to a crisp skeleton. The incident took place on April 25, 2015 when Chivate was on his way from Bandra to Poonawalla's Breach Candy home after dropping off guests at the Taj Lands End Hotel in the Porsche. Poonawalla had proceeded to Breach Candy separately. The car was later towed away to a Porsche workshop in suburban Mumbai.
Poonawalla states that cars come and go. But, what troubled him over the past few weeks is that it could have been one of his family members or the driver in the car when the fire broke out. The business baron reportedly contacted Porsche India's top management who asked him to wait for 48 hours. But according to Poonawalla, days have passed by and all that he has heard from the management is that that the company has not found a suitable expert to investigate the matter.
Porsche India, on the other hand, states that the company is aware of the incident and that the firm is in direct contact with the owner of the vehicle and are taking immediate action to ascertain the cause of the fire.
