Rally driver Mark Higgins made headlines this week for setting a new lap record at the Isle of Man TT course on board a highly modified Subaru WRX STI. Higgins’ lap time of 17:49.75 with an average speed of 126.971 mph easily eclipsed his previous lap record by close to 90 seconds, but a far more impressive feat was accomplished by motorcycle rider Michael Dunlop, who became the first rider to cover the entire course in under 17 minutes. In fact, Dunlop’s first two laps during the RST Superbike TT went below 17 minutes, including a 16:58.254 time that carried an average speed of 133.393 mph.
And so, Dunlop officially became the fastest man at the Isle of Man when he posted the fastest lap in the race’s history. As always, records like the one he just set is deserving of having a video document the entire lap. That’s exactly what we have here as the 27-year old rider cuts a blistering pace through the picturesque racing circuit. The video itself may be 17 minutes long, but rest assured, watching Dunlop eviscerate the Isle of Man’s lap record in one of best seats in the house is a sight to be remembered.
Remember, Dunlop did all of this in a motorcycle on a road course that has its own share of notable twists, turns, and speed bumps. I don’t know if anybody else will be able to top his record run, but considering that the Isle of Man TT still has a lot of racing left, I wouldn’t put it past the competitors to take a crack at Dunlop’s record-setting performance.
As for the rest of us, let’s all just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
