The Infiniti Q60 initially rolled onto the scene at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show as a concept that looked to be nearly production ready. And, sure enough, it didn’t take long for Infiniti to announce the car we had all been waiting for. Packing a 208-horsepower four-cylinder in entry-level form or as much as 400 horsepower with a 3.0-liter V-6, the Q60 is Infiniti’s halo car of sorts that competes with models like the Mercedes C-Class and the BMW 4-Series. With the range-topping Q60 Red Sport offering so much power, we’ve been hoping that Infiniti would take on the likes of the BMW M4 or Mercedes-AMG C63, but according to Car Advice plans for such a hardcore model don’t even exist at this point.
Car Advice caught up with Infiniti’s Senior Manager of Product Strategy, Gerardo Carmona, and asked him about a more extreme version of the Q60, but he did little more than let them down easy:
“That’s never going to be off the table, because Infiniti is all about performance, in a very sculpted and artisan way. But, unfortunately, it’s not going to come very soon. Everything is up for consideration, and we have a lot of options within the R&D group. Right now we’re focusing on the 400 horsepower and although we currently don’t have any ambition for this car to go and compete with the vehicles you’ve mentioned, as for doing something more, that is something we’re not yet able to disclose.”
With that said, there is at least a little bit of hope there since, you know, “that’s never going to be off the table.” But, it’s important to remember that Infiniti has always been a little more focused on luxury than performance anyway and it’s a small player in the grand scheme of things. The Q60 has the looks, and with the range-topping model pushing 400 ponies, it’s not exactly a slouch either, but how awesome would a 550 horsepower Q60 be?
