There was massive hype surrounding the unveiling of the all-new 2016 Audi R8 considering its predecessor has garnered such a large fan base. And so the supercar to watch out for despite not being the most powerful in Supercar heaven that is the Geneva Motor Show is the Audi R8, but before the show kickstarts in less than ten days, the wraps are off the four-ringed superstar.
The Audi R8 seen here shouldn't be mistaken for a massive face-lift because it's an all-new car. We will reserve our judgment till we see the car in the flesh because its predecessor too looked a lot more dramatic up close. What we do see from these pictures is the clear family design look we first saw in the Audi TT. The R8 has a lot more muscle though due to wider haunches. The characteristic side blade seen first on the previous generation car has now been spilt in two with a prominent lower half. The rear of the R8 is more muscular than the rest of the car with the large diffuser and split diamond shaped exhaust tips.
This R8 is built on a new space frame chassis, which is 15 percent lighter yet 40 percent more torsionally rigid compared to the outgoing R8. It gets a revised version of the mid-mounted 5.2-litre V10. Yes the V8 doesn't come first as Audi has decided to bring its best guns to the table. The R8 gets a V10 and V10 Plus variant to begin with. The former pumps out 548PS of power and 540Nm of torque to catapult the 4WD Supercar to a top speed of 323kmph and a 0-100kmph sprint in 3.5 seconds. The V10 Plus gets 619PS and 560Nm to play with. A 100kmph sprint comes up in just 3.2 seconds and the top whack is a mighty 330kmph. The best news about the R8 is Audi hasn't got sucked into the turbocharging frenzy and with the car expected to be around for at least a decade, we can still toast to the relatively affordable naturally aspirated Supercar.
The new Audi R8 gets a 7-speed dual clutch transmission, a mechanical differential and the all-wheel drive Quattro system that can transmit all of the power to either the front or rear axles or any wheel is the proportion required to get the most traction out of corners. The construction is a mix of high strength carbon fibre and aluminium and the R8 gets carbon ceramic brakes as an optional extra on the V10 and standard fitment on the V10 plus.
The R8 gets LED headlights and an optional laser high beam, 19 inch wheels (20 inch optional wheels) with 245/35 tyres at the front and 295/35 at the rear. The R8 is highly customizable as is expected of all supercars these days from the side blades to the interior to tyre sizes. Speaking of the interior, it gets what Audi calls its virtual cockpit. A screen for the instrument cluster displays everything you will expect from the dials to the navigation. The steering wheel is a lot busier now with the start stop button, drive select button and all other controls nestled in. It frees up the centre console which only shows the air-con vents and buttons like the traction control on-off switch and the MMI system behind the gear lever.
The new Audi R8 will be showcased at the Geneva Motor Show on March 5.
