The idea of a motoring or a car museum in India is one that us petrolheads have longed for. There are of course a few private collections on display in Ahmadabad and recently in Goa and the Transport Museum in Gurgaon, a museum that transcends the evolution of the automobile in its rawest sense never existed. The all-new Gedee Car Museum in the city of Coimbatore in South India is exactly that, a showcase of evolution rather than just a static display of cars.

From an exact working and accurate replica of the 1886 Benz Patent Motorwagen to the likes of a phenomenal Hispano Suiza h6B that graced the 2015 Cartier Concours d'Elegance, the museum boasts a large collection of cars that transcends the history of the automobile. Cars like the Ford Model T, the first mass produced car in the world, the Volkswagen Beetle, the first real people's car and the Morris Mini, the first transverse engine car, are all on display at the museum.

Additionally, microcars or bubblecars like the BMW Isetta and the Goggomobile are also on display alongside behemoths like the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow and a pristine single owner Rolls Royce 20HP that have been in the family for decades. The collection also boasts some modern cars like the Mazda RX8, known for its rotary wankel engine, a first generation Mercedes-Benz SLK tuned by Brabus and a pristine first generation Porsche Boxster. Indian cars like a Hindustan Ambassador MK1 also take centre stage and will be joined soon by a first generation Maruti 800 and a Tata Nano.

Apart from the cars, our favorite section of the museum is a showcase of the engines that the owners' firm United Motor Services manufacturers. From the likes of a perfect to scale replica of a Maybach engine to a 7-cylinder radial engine used to aero modeling to external combustion engines, the sheer precision and technology that goes into these engines is absolutely jaw dropping. The Museum also plans to expand its facility in the near future and add a certificate course on restoration of classic and vintage automobiles.

In our opinion, not only is the Gedee Car Museum a fabulous facility, but with the aim of education, as compared to just being a showcase of someones' collection, the philanthropic angle attached makes it an even special place to visit for people of all ages.
