There was lot of drama in the 2015 Italian MotoGP before the race as Marc Marquez had a torrid qualifying session that saw him qualify in 13th position on the grid. It was the worst qualifying performance of his MotoGP career and for the first occasion Marquez was looking under pressure. Andrea Iannone delighted the Italian fans as he qualified on pole while Lorenzo split the Ducati riders in second place while Andrea Dovizioso was third. The Ducati riders were salivating on a prospect of handing over their team a famous win in front of their home fans while Lorenzo was looking forward for his third consecutive win and Rossi was planning of making amends after qualifying eighth. When the lights went off, it seemed as if Iannone made a false start but the Italian rider continued with his pace after hesitating a bit, Lorenzo took advantage of this to grab the race lead while Dovizioso was in third place. It seemed as if a ballistic missile was plonked behind Marquez's bike as he made an outstanding start that saw him jump seven positions as he slid his way into the first corner. By the end of lap one, Marquez was up in fourth position in what can be labelled as a start that was beyond belief.
Behind all this action, Rossi was struggling as he languished in eighth position and made no progress. Such was Marquez's pace that he was soon contesting with Iannone for the second place. After a few corners he was up in second position to the amazement of the Italian fans who seemed stunned by the pace of the Repsol Honda rider and he also posted the fastest lap of the race. It seemed that Marquez would give stiff competition to Lorenzo for the race lead but that didn't happen as the Yamaha rider responded by hiking his pace and etching out breathing space between the two riders. In the mean time, Iannone and Dovizioso caught up with the reigning champion to make it a three way battle for second place. Such was the scuffle between the trio of riders that positions were exchanged on a regular basis with Marquez running wide on the first corner on many occasions to counter the Ducati's which were hitting speeds close to 350kmph.
The battle benefitted both Lorenzo and Pedrosa as the Yamaha rider expanded his lead to over four seconds and the Spanish racer made it a four way skirmish for second position. The pack of riders provided great entertainment to the Italian fans with some brilliant overtaking manoeuvres while Valentino Rossi seemed to be on a charge with 10 laps remaining. The MotoGP legend soon passed Bradley Smith and Andrea Dovizioso to take fourth position with only a few laps remaining.
Dovizioso retired from the race with mechanical problems and Marquez was engrossed in an intriguing battle with Iannone for second place. Marquez pushed his luck too far as he lost his front in pursuit of Iannone to crash out of the race to a thunderous roar from the Italian crowd. Rossi soon passed Pedrosa for a podium position but Iannone maintained his lead to deny the Yamaha rider second place. Far ahead Lorenzo eased from his over eight seconds lead to cruise his way past the chequered flag winning the Italian GP with a flawless performance. Iannone was ecstatic with second place finish which was his best performance in the premiere class while Rossi seemed satisfied with the final step on the rostrum.
