Nelson Piquet Jr. wins first ever Formula E Championship

Nelson Piquet Jr wins first Formula E Championship

The first ever season of the Formula E Championship has drawn to a close, and what a year it has been. With a tough battle for the top spot that continued right up to the final stages of the last race, there couldn't have been a better start for the racing series.

While the championship overall has been quite interesting, it was the final race in London that hosted the championship decider. Nelson Piquet Jr. won the championship ahead of Sebastien Buemi by a single point. With Buemi taking top honours on Saturday, Piquet Jr's lead got cut down to just five points going into the final race on Sunday.

Piquet started the race 10 places behind Buemi but managed to gain four positions right at the start of the race. He then started conserving energy to ensure that he could go one lap longer than the rest of the pack, and the strategy seemed to have worked for the Brazilian. Piquet jumped into his second car and rejoined the race in 10th place. Fortunately for him, it was team-mate Oliver Turvey ahead of him, who then allowed him to pass. Piquet then continued to push and gained another position by overtaking Salvador Duran from the outside of Turn 13. Piquet finished the race just two places behind Buemi in eighth.

But for a majority of the race, Buemi looked like he was inching closer to a championship victory. Despite qualifying in sixth, he looked on course for a win before he spun out in his out lap after the car changes resulting in a loss of position which eventually cost him the championship.

As far as the race is concerned, Sam Bird took top honours in the season finale, while Jerome D'Ambrosio and Loic Duval secured the remaining two podium places.
