Can this India-made solar-powered scooter change the way you commute?

India-made solar-electric hybrid scooter

An increase in the level of pollution has appalled environmentalists across the globe. The Green Court recently pointed out that the situation in Delhi has become so alarming that medically people have been advised to leave the Capital. In order to keep the pollution level in check and also make your commute more eco-friendly ETI Dynamics has unveiled a prototype solar-electric hybrid scooter at the Press Club of India in New Delhi for a price of just Rs 50,000.

Riding the scooter under the sultry summer sun is a task in itself. But, to the rescue of several Indian riders comes a bendable solar panel, which apart from protecting the rider from heat also helps in charging the vehicle. As this vehicle can be charged with electricity and solar energy it is called as a hybrid.

According to the company, once the batteries are completely charged, this solar-electric hybrid scooter can travel a claimed maximum speed of 45kmph, which means that this scooter could be a good option for one's daily commute within the city. So if you want to head to work or pick up some stuff from the nearby grocery store, this vehicle could be an apt option for you.

ETI Dynamics is planning to implement this concept in auto-rickshaws, buses and golf-carts as well. The company currently has no manufacturing unit in India and is looking for collaborations with a range of engineering institutions and vehicle manufacturers to assemble and bring the prototype to Indian roads by 2016.

The company is also creating a number of mobile phone applications that will help consumers locate charging stations, make payments and monitor battery performance.
