Honda Cars India has been the fastest growing car manufacturer in India in the past couple of years, backed by successful car launches like the Amaze, City and Mobilio but now the company is seeing a period of consolidation. Car sales grew 1 percent in May 2015 in the domestic market, with 13,431 units last month as opposed to 13,362 units in May 2014.
The biggest seller continues to be the Honda City, posting 7,562 units in May, the highest of any car in its class by a large margin. There seems to be no stopping the City as no new cars are scheduled to be launched in this segment for some time to come. The Amaze might be feeling a bit old now but the introduction of AVN system equipped variants seem to have infused a new lease of life into the compact sedan. May tally stands at 3,699 units for the Amaze.
The Mobilio isn't an out-n-out success but is posting steady numbers above the 1K mark. In May, Honda sold 1,249 units of the Mobilio, slightly dented by the launch of the Renault Lodgy. The Japanese carmaker could sell only 873 units of the Brio in May.
While Honda isn't a big exporter, the company continues to take baby steps towards the ports. In May, 655 units were shipped from Honda plants in India and this number is likely to go up after the Jazz is launched next month. We will be driving the Jazz next week so stay tuned to Zigwheels for a full report on Honda's latest entrant.
