Hyundai India sales rose 3.4 percent in May 2015 backed by strong numbers posted by its premium hatchback and crosshatch duo, Elite i20 and i20 Active. The two sold over 10,000 units cumulatively for the fourth consecutive month. Hyundai admits weaker demand in rural markets and for diesel vehicles though.
Commenting on the May sales Mr. Rakesh Srivastava, Sr. VP- Sales and Marketing, HMIL said, "In a market experiencing low growth with decreasing contribution of rural and diesel vehicles sales, Hyundai volumes grew to 37,450 units with fourth consecutive month of more than 10,000 units of highly successful and acceptable Elite andamp; Active showcasing customers changing preference towards brands delivering high aspirational value at attainable price."
Domestic sales in May stood at 37,450 units, a 3.4 percent rise from 36,205 units in May 2014. Exports meanwhile dipped by 2.9 percent from 15,513 units in May 2014 to 15,065 units last month bring the cumulative count to 52,515 units for Hyundai, a growth of 1.5 percent.
The big challenge for Hyundai will come when Honda introduces the Jazz premium hatchback in July as the popular Honda brand and the potentially competent package of the Jazz is sure to bring a change in the segment. Another threat for the Elite i20 will be Maruti's premium hatchback YRA that is scheduled for a festive season launch.
