Subaru has taken the wraps off the 2017 Impreza 5-door concept at the ongoing 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, with a newfound focus on "dynamic" design and a "solid" aesthetic foundation rather than the drive-train or tech. Which basically means that we aren't to expect the new-generation 2017 Subaru Impreza to look exactly like the concept car, because it's a design study that is hinting at the design direction for the entire brand's future lineup.
Switch to a modular platform, the 2017 Impreza concept embodies a new design style that its makers terms "Dynamic andamp; Solid." The car has a wider, more athletic stance than the current Impreza hatch, with narrower headlights, sharply creased bodyside lines, and kinked C-pillar that recalls the similar design element on Infiniti models. Subaru's polygonal black grille continues to define the car's nose, while C-shaped taillights adorn the liftgate. This concept is almost exactly the same length and height as today's Subaru Impreza hatchback, but 5.5 inches wider, contributing to what Subaru calls a "Wide andamp; Low" look.
Further details, especially on the powertrain and interior, are very limited, other than Subaru's assurance of "excellent aerodynamics."
Although officially unconfirmed, the production version of the next Impreza is expected to be unveiled at a major auto show next year. Essentially a toned-down version of the concept that will be shown in Tokyo, it will be lighter and wide than the current model because it will ride on a brand new platform developed to underpin most of Subaru's next-gen lineup.
As for the innards, the 2017 Impreza will usher in more efficient flat-four engines fitted with direct fuel-injection and Subaru's fuel-saving cylinder deactivation technology. A plug-in hybrid model might join the lineup a little later in the production run.
