So car sales are firmly on the upswing and new car launches are bearing a positive impact on carmakers. We see the Mobilio and the Elite i20 both do good for Honda and Hyundai respectively and Maruti's weak 2013 sales are doing wonders on the charts in terms of percentage rise this year. Tata Motors launched the Bolt last month so we will know next month of the company is finally getting back to the big league with it. Till then, here are the top five for August 2014 andndash;
1. Maruti Suzuki
Maruti has a dismal mid-year in 2013 with the strikes and the fire affecting production. But when you lose some, you gain some and this year is time for gain. Sales figures are in the positive and by a large margin. August sales went up 29.3 percent almost crossing the one lakh mark and September sales most likely will cross it with the Ciaz launch nearing. The Celerio is doing well for Maruti and the Dzire is breaking record after record. The Dzire in fact is the largest selling Maruti last month overtaking the Alto.
2. Hyundai
Hyundai now has two mass market new cars that are off to a great start. The Xcent is doing very well and the Elite i20 has already received over 12,000 bookings in the first 15 days of its launch. Naturally then, Hyundai is seeing a sales upswing, widening its gap from the third placed manufacturer. Hyundai posted a 19.2 percent rise last month in domestic sales, selling 33,750 units compared to 28,311 units in the corresponding period last year.
3. Honda
Last month Honda announced that their best seller, the City will not be produced in August as the company is shifting its production from their Greater Noida plant to the new facility in Tapukara. We expected sales to drop this month as a result but they haven't. In fact the Amaze has had an excellent month selling over 9,000 units and the Mobilio too clocked over 5,500 units last month. This means domestic sales stand at 16,758 units in August, a rise of 88 percent.
4. Mahindra
Mahindra is desperate for a good product to drag them out of this downturn. The Indian SUV major slipped 11 percent in August to the corresponding period last month. The numbers stand at 14,140 units versus 15,821 in August 2013. Mahindra recently announced another Rs 4,000 crore investment in the Chakan facility and with that is making a statement that the company is down but isn't out. We will know better if Mahindra revives itself sooner or later with the launch of the updated Scorpio.
5. Toyota
Toyota is at the edge of 5th spot here. Tata Motors has lost ground but the company has received good response for the Zest so expect them to make a comeback by next month. Toyota's best selling model is still the Innova, and while the Innova and Fortuner do well, the smaller cars aren't. What's good news though for Toyota India is that the Altis is bucking the trend in the D-Segment and has become the segment leader by a large margin, much like the Fortuner is in its segment. Toyota sold 11,215 units in August, a drop of 6.6 percent from the corresponding period last year.
