BMW X1



The X1 was launched in 2009 as BMW’s smallest crossover and fourth SUV after the X3, X5, and X6. The compact crossover shares the same platform with the larger X3, which is based on the underpinnings of the BMW 3 Series. Besides marking BMW’s entry into a new segment, the X1 also introduced the company’s N20 engine and became BMW’s first SUV to offer rear-wheel drive as an option in the United States. Praised for its powerful engines, sedan-like dynamics, and good fuel economy, the X1 became a commercial success with more than 700,000 units sold globally through 2014. Already six years old as of 2015, the first-generation X1 nears the end of its life cycle as Munich prepares to launch a redesigned replacement.


Reportedly scheduled to break cover at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September and hit U.S. dealerships as a 2016 model, the second-gen X1 is still a mystery as it strolls through Europe wearing swirly camouflage. Testing will soon come to an end, which is when the first official details may surface, but, until that happens, I’ve put together a speculative review on what the upcoming X1 might be all about.
