2017 BMW 5 Series Unveiled

BMW just unveiled the seventh-generation 5 Series, and with the changeover comes upgraded performance, improved driving dynamics, and a huge portfolio of technology.

Let’s start under the hood, where we find either a four- or six-cylinder all-aluminum powerplant. Boosted by a twin-scroll turbocharger, the 2.0-liter four-banger manages 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, launching the 5 Series from 0-to-60 mph in 6 seconds (5.8 seconds with AWD). At the top of the trim line is a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder producing 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, which is enough to propel the Bimmer from 0-to-60 mph in 4.9 seconds (4.7 seconds with AWD).

Each powertrain will be offered with AWD at launch. Handling the cogs is an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Speaking of handling, the 5 Series uses a double-wishbone suspension in front, and a five-link set-up in the rear. Buyers can now opt into available adaptive components with Dynamic Damper Control (basically electromechanical anti-roll stabilization). There’s also Integral Active Steering, which can now be combined with AWD.

BMW’s M Division will offer up a Sport Package that includes new aero, Shadowline exterior trim, a lowered suspension, 19-inch wheels, a new steering wheel, and upgraded interior materials. Adding the M also bumps top speed to 155 mph.

Inside, you’ll find a new iDrive system, a heads-up display, upgraded voice control, and gesture control. Rounding out the infotainment is a standard 10.25-inch display, and a suite of semi-autonomous driving systems (active cruise control, lane-departure warning, parking assist, etc.).

The exterior dimensions were increased, and there are active slats in the kidney grille for greater aero efficiency. Wheel sizing is up to 20 inches in diameter.

Look for the 2017 BMW 5 Series in dealers this February, with pricing details expected sometime closer to launch.
