In 2014, our spy photographers spotted the next-generation BMW 5 Series stretching its wheels on the Nurburgring track for the very first time. Later that year, the sedan was caught once again testing in Europe. Come October 2016 and the new 5 Series finally made its official debut, showcasing its evolutionary design and state-of-the art features.
As seen with recently launched new Bimmers, the next 5 Series lost some weight thanks to the use of the new 7 Series’ CFRP technology, as well as magnesium, aluminum, and high-strength steel. The sedan is up to 137 pounds lighter than its predecessor (depending on trim and equipment), which isn’t a whole lot, but enough to make a difference in the performance and fuel economy departments.
The new-generation 5 Series was unveiled with four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines for the North American market, but more versions, including a range-topping V-8 and a high-performance M5 are set to follow. The all-new midsize will be available at U.S. dealers starting February 2017.
