The Chevrolet Beat compact hatchback is GM India's best-selling model in the country, as claimed by the company in the 2014 Auto Expo. One of the reasons for its popularity is the small and efficient diesel engine it has on offer. The Chevrolet Beat was launched in India back in 2010 and recently during the 2014 Auto Expo the company introduced a slightly refreshed version of the hatchback.
General Motors is now working on the next generation Chevrolet Beat, which is internationally known as Chevrolet Spark, and one of the test mules of small car was spotted in Europe a few days ago. The spy pictures have caught a completely camouflaged car but one can make out it's a Chevrolet Beat by its teardrop-like body shell and the side profile which resemble the current model. The other obvious giveaway is the integrated rear door handles, which are still uniquely positioned near the C-pillar.
The major difference between the current generation of Chevrolet Beat and the new car are in its front design. The 2015 Chevrolet Beat will replace the old chunky vertical headlamps for sleeker and more conventional horizontal ones. Chevrolet's dual port front grille also gets a makeover, and now there will be a prominent body panel to hold the front number plate. The shoulder-line of the test car seems to be toned-down quite a bit which has resulted in larger rear windows. It's a practical move to make the rear passenger feel less claustrophobic, but at the same time it mutes the radical design the current generation Chevrolet Beat is associated with.
Due to heavy camouflage it is difficult to spot other design enhancements, especially on the rear of the car, but the vertical layout of the rear taillights are carried forward. The overall design of the 2015 Chevrolet Beat appears to have been played down and might be more understated than before.
In India the Chevrolet Beat runs on three fuels - petrol, diesel and LPG. The petrol version is equipped with a 1.2-litre, four cylinder, in-line, DOHC, SMARTECH II engine that produces 80.5PS peak power and 108Nm max torque. The same engine powers the LPG version. The Beat diesel sports a 1.0 XSDE SMARTECH motor that gives it 58.5PS of power output and 150 Nm of torque, and claims to return an impressive 25.44kmpl.
Although there is no official statement from General Motors about the 2015 Chevrolet Beat, it is expected to be unveiled in the first half of next year.
