BMW India has achieved yet another milestone by locally producing 40,000 units of its premium cars at BMW Plant Chennai. A gleaming white BMW 5 Series was designated to be the 40,000thcar to roll out of BMW's Chennai facility, in presence of Philipp von Sahr, President, BMW Group India and Robert Frittrang, Managing Director, BMW Plant Chennai.

Locally manufactured cars have the advantage to be priced aggressively in the Indian market, as CBU (Completely Built Units) or imported cars attract astounding import duties and taxes. To keep the price competitive and in turn increase sales volume, luxury car makers try to increase localisation in their top selling car models.

Earlier this year in June 2014, BMW India announced that it had started to assemble the all-new BMW X5 SUV in India. The BMW Plant Chennai started operations back in 2007 and currently assembles BMW 1 Series hatchback, BMW 3 Series sedan, BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, BMW 5 Series sedan, BMW 7 Series sedan, and in the SUV line-up includes the BMW X1, BMW X3 and like mentioned before the BMW X5. The BMW Plant Chennai also manufactures Mini Countryman, as the Mini brand is part of the BMW Group portfolio. The plant has an annual production capacity of 11,000 units on double shift basis.

BMW will be launching the New Mini in India in the traditional 3-door format, along with the newly introduced 5-door avatar in India on November 19th. Soon after, on November 26th, the German marque will roll out the all-new BMW M3 and BMW M4 in India.
