Mercedes AMG Sport models headed for Detroit

Mercedes AMG Sport coming to Detroit

Mercedes-Benz is realizing the potential of its performance arm AMG only recently with the smaller engines entering the market. That's not to say that AMG isn't popular or successful as the in-house tuning division but in terms of sheer numbers, the high price-high horsepower combination make them a rare breed. With an expanding Mercedes range, more so towards the lower end of the portfolio, the past couple of years have seen the growth of smaller more affordable AMGs and at the Detroit Motor Show, you will get to see more of it.

Mercedes has announced a new sub brand called AMG Sport. It is the half-way range, distancing itself just right from hardcore AMGs and the standard Mercedes models. Two new AMG Sport models will be revealed at Detroit, one will most likely be a crossover based on the MLC coupe/crossover (BMW X6 competitor) and the other will be the C45 AMG with the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol from the A,CLA and GLA.

The new AMG Sport models will get upgraded engines, suspension and brakes to stock cars and most markets will get all wheel drive as standard. Mercedes plans to double AMG sales from 2013 by 2017 and then on sell 40,000 units globally per annum.
