The German state of Lower Saxony reports that a file on Volkswagen's massive diesel emissions scandal had disappeared, and it has filed a criminal complaint with the authorities. A spokeswoman for the state government says the file, which included internal government memos on the emissions scandal, was last seen on Friday, Oct. 9. Staff discovered the file was missing the following Monday.
Lower Saxony, VW's second-biggest shareholder after Porsche Automobil Holding SE, however, hastened to add that the missing file did not contain any documents from the supervisory board. The spokeswoman said the file contained printouts and duplicates of documents most of which are available online as well as in-house notes on legal questions.
Although the loss of the file is "annoying," it is not "highly problematic," the spokeswoman said.
The spokeswoman said the state chancellery had reported a criminal offence and had interviewed several employees to see whether they had noticed anything unusual, but this had not led to any concrete results.
The German newspaper Bild had reported previously that a "secret file" on VW had gone missing.
