Manufacturers are gearing up to display their new launches at what is one of Asia's largest auto shows. Out of the world's major luxury carmakers, Audi, has announced that it will be showcasing three new cars at the Auto Expo 2016. They're as follows.
Audi Prologue Concept: Portraying the future design philosophy of the German manufacturer, Audi will display the Prologue concept which is a five-door model with a raised body structure. Displayed first at the Shanghai Auto Show, the Prologue concept will be one of the highlights as claimed by the manufacturer. The Prologue concept is a combination of new-age technology without compromising on everyday practicality of the vehicle.
Fiat has been considering bringing the Jeep brand to India for a while. The Italian car maker initially declared the launch of the Jeep brand in India in 2013 but that was postponed due to price related issues. Now though, it seems that the launch is finally around the corner. With the launch of its Indian website and recent activity on all social media platforms it seems evident that the launch is around the corner.
Two years back when Jeep was scheduled to come to India, it was expected to come with two models andndash; the Wrangler Unlimited and the Grand Cherokee. But apart from these two, a third model is also expected to come to India now - the flagship Grand Cherokee SRT. This new model will mark the introduction of the performance SRT brand in India.
The Grand Cherokee SRT comes with a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 unit that makes 475 horses and an insane 630Nm of torque. These figures allow the Grand Cherokee SRT to touch the 100kmph mark from standstill in just 5 seconds, and that's quite a feat considering its humungous size.
The standard Grand Cherokee on the other hand will sport a 3.0-litre unit that makes 240PS. This engine comes mated to a ZF-sourced 8-speed autobox. The Wrangler Unlimited is available in short wheelbase and long wheelbase version in the international market but in India only the longer one is expected to go on sale. The 4-door Wrangler Unlimited will make 200PS from a 2.8-litre diesel mill. This unit will come mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox.
Fiat is expected to launch the Grand Cherokee SRT at around Rs 1.40 crore. The Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler Unlimited should be priced around Rs 60 lakh and Rs 40 lakh respectively. Expect all these three cars to be showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo in February.
Endless speculations and rumours finally came to an end when Mahindra unveiled its upcoming compact SUV to the press and public earlier this month. Mahindra also officially announced that they will call this new offering the KUV100, and it will go on sale on January 15, 2016.
Leading up to the launch, details of the Mahindra KUV100's variant information is already out. In a typically Mahindra fashion, each of the variants will have an alphanumeric combination. The KUV100 will be introduced in four variants namely andndash; K2, K4, K6 and K8. The lower three variants will come with safety oriented "+" badges that will come equipped with dual front airbags. Talking about safety, all variants of the KUV100 will come with Antilock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) as standard equipment.
The base K2 variant will come fitted with an adjustable steering wheel, electronic power steering, air conditioning, body coloured bumpers and a rear spoiler. While the base variant has very few features to flaunt, the K4 variant comes slightly better equipped. Over and above the aforementioned features, the K4 also comes fitted with power windows, central locking, foldable rear seats, wheel caps, day-night inside rear view mirror and wheel arch claddings.
The K6 variant is the one that we feel will bring Mahindra the numbers. It is expected to come with a 2-DIN audio system with four speakers, remote central locking, electrically adjustable ORVMs, cooled glove box, height adjustable driver's seat and multiple-drive modes. Cosmetic changes on this variant include piano black interiors, chrome inserts on the front grille, door claddings, and blackened out B-pillar.
The top-end trim of the Mahindra KUV100 will come heavily loaded with features. It will get alloy wheels, puddle lamps on all four doors, DRLs, silver accents on door handles and, most importantly, a start/stop micro hybrid system.
Mahindra will bring in the KUV100 on January 15, 2016 and when it is launched it is expected to be priced between Rs 4 andndash; 6 lakh. With the KUV100, Mahindra is targeting to compete against some hatchbacks like the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Hyundai Grand i10, and more.
Science fiction has often inspired many an automobile fantasy, and self-driven cars, appearing in movies like Will Smith's I, Robot, have portrayed the possibility of them coming to reality in a pretty compelling fashion. Ever since the first self-sufficient and truly autonomous cars appeared in the 1980s, with Carnegie Mellon University's Navlab and ALV projects in 1984 and Mercedes-Benz and Bundeswehr University Munich's EUREKA Prometheus Project in 1987, major companies and research organisations have been trying their hands to develop the technology further. And despite scepticism about their future, the developments in 2015 have reaffirmed that autonomous cars are going to be the next big thing in automotive evolution.
Tesla takes centre stage
Tesla accelerated its self-driving car efforts in November, taking on the existing players in this market andndash; Google and Apple. After launching a software update for its Model S electric cars that gave it self-driving capabilities in "beta", the Tesla chief executive, Elon Musk, took to Twitter in the dying days of November to announce a "ramping up the Autopilot software team at Tesla to achieve generalised full autonomy". It further fuelled the raging war between Tesla and Apple, where the former is accused of poaching engineers from its Randamp;D team.
Elon Musk has also gone on record this month to say that these cars are now looking possible within two years.
Traditional carmakers join the race
The German carmaker trio of BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz's acquisition of Nokia's mapping and location service division HERE earlier in December spelled the entry of more traditional carmakers jumping on this bandwagon. "This will power location services that improve mobility for people and enterprises, make driving safer and more enjoyable, and reduce emissions," said HERE president Sean Fernback in a blog post soon thereafter, spelling the entry of German majors in this industry.
Google leapfrogs competition; partners with Ford
While earlier reports had suggested that Ford will begin testing its autonomous vehicles early next year, fresh rumours regarding the American carmaker's ties with Google did the rounds very recently. According to a report, Google and Ford are forming a partnership to build self-driving cars, a move that pairs one of the world's top automakers with one of the pioneering companies developing robo-car technology.
Roadblocks on the way
California, where the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has now drafted regulations for the public use of autonomous cars, is the biggest turf for the development of this technology. However, with the new rules, a licensed driver, or "operator," must be in the vehicle when it is in use and able to take control of it in the event of a problem. Cars designed to be completely driverless, like that being tested by Google, are to be initially excluded from being granted licenses until their safety and performance can be further evaluated and the regulations revised accordingly. It clearly has not gone down well with the technology giant which also voiced its disappointment in a statement earlier.
2016 could be an exciting year
There was no shortage of autonomous vehicle news in 2015. Between safety improvements and proposed commercial applications, they're looking more and more appealing all the time. Once the ethical and legal issues have been resolved, autonomous vehicles will be off to the races. Even so, from new regulations for deployment to a rumoured partnership between two of the biggest players in the rapidly emerging autonomous vehicle industry, 2016 is looking to be the most exciting year for autonomous vehicles yet.
As a part of a raft of measures taken by the Delhi government to curb the increasing menace of pollution in the National Capital, including a temporary ban on the registration of larger diesel-powered cars, sports-utility vehicles and minivans, the odd-even rule is set to be introduced from Friday. But you might not be aware of a lot of salient features from the new formula that could just save you from the trouble. Here, we list the most crucial ones.
1. From Jan 1 to 15, those driving cars with license plates ending with an even number will only be allowed on the roads on even-numbered dates. Those driving cars with license plates ending in an odd figure will be allowed on the roads on the other days.
2. The rules apply from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and anyone caught breaking them will incur a 2,000 rupee ($30) fine. The rule isn't applicable on Sundays.
3. Women driving alone or accompanied by children under the age of 12, are exempt, as are cars driven by the physically disabled.
4. Two-wheeled motors, basically motorcycles and scooters, as well as hybrid and electric cars and vans that run on compressed natural gas, will be allowed to drive without restriction.
5. Green-and-yellow auto rickshaws and black-and-yellow taxis will run uninterrupted on Delhi roads.
6. Cars with diplomatic and defence ministry license plates, the army, police, and some officials' cars, including those belonging to the president, vice president and prime minister's convoys, will be allowed to move through Delhi whenever they choose. Transport department vehicles and paramilitary force motors will also have unfettered access to the roads.
7. Exemption in the case of emergency, disabled persons, patients, etc.
8. All school students in Delhi are excused from school during the 15-day pilot.
9. When the pilot is over, Delhi authorities will take stock, CM Arvind Kejriwal has said. He added that the odd-even driving plan might be enforced whenever Delhi's air quality reaches hazardous levels in future, a policy already followed in Beijing.
The latest to join the mobile/internet revolution in the country is the road transport ministry, who has devised new ways to making motoring safer in the country. No, we're not exactly referring to ABS/airbags being made mandatory, but to a new SMS service initiated by the Government. So if you are in the market for buying a used car, you can check its genuineness by simply sending an SMS to 7738299899.
The last few years have seen a huge upsurge in the volumes of the used car market due to a variety of reasons like car manufacturers themselves entering the arena, the lucrativeness of buying a bigger used car than a brand new small car for similar money, and of course increasing disposable incomes that are enabling buyers to fulfil their dreams of buying a car. The SMS service should make used car buying a more hassle-free experience and help in bringing down the number of stolen cars being sold off in the used car market, though we hear the system has a few teething issues currently.
Similarly, it will soon be possible to check the authenticity of one's driving license by simply sending a text message to 8790499899. This should have establishments that accept driving licenses as address proof heave a sigh of relief, as it will help in reducing the forging of documents. The service is also expected to benefit people used to traveling around in hired cars, as they can check the authenticity of the drivers' licenses by getting basic information about the license holder like name, place of issue and validity.
A web-based application has also been created for the purpose, basis queries received by the transport ministry about the measure to check genuineness of the documents of vehicles as also license holders. Any individual wanting information about a particular vehicle simply needs to SMS 'VAHAN' (hindi for automobile) with the registration certificate (RC) number of the vehicle to get fixed information like engine and chassis number, city of registration and validity of the RC, all free of cost. To check details about a particular driving license, one needs to SMS "SARDL" to the above mentioned number.
An interesting initiative this, and should help making the roads safer, in a different light.
The Tata Safari has been around for ages. In fact, it is one of the few SUVs that remains true to the SUVesque nature that we grew so familiar to about a decade ago. In short, the Safari is a large vehicle which does not warrant messing around with on the road. A few years ago, Tata did soften up the Safari a little with the introduction of the new Storme.
The design inspiration from the newly acquired JLR group was pretty obvious back then and the Storme did manage to woo Indian audiences once again albeit for a short amount of time. With competition like the Scorpio resurrected with renewed vigor, the Safari Storme does seem to lack in appeal a little bit which is why Tata have decided to step the game up and give it a little more power and a little more torque.
We will not really talk about the exterior and the interior of the Tata Safari Storme in this review since Tata has done nothing to the Varicor 400 to differentiate it from the normal Safari Storme with the exception of adding a badge on the fender. Of course, the pictures you see here do hint otherwise but gladly, all the addon parts you see here are dealer fitted and will not be on the standard car.
This will include the fake bonnet scoop and bug deflector which we think looks hideous anyways. That said, Tata could and should have incorporated the LED daytime running lights into the bumper like the ones seen here. The interior too is unchanged and gets the same dashboard and seats like you get on the standard facelifted car.
So let us get to the engine which is the only real difference in this new Safari. For starters, the new engine is absolutely the same unit when it comes to construction and internals. In fact, the engine is identical to the one you get on the normal Safari Storme albeit with a different state of tune. So has 6 more PS of power really made a difference? Well, it is not the power that is the real change here, but the torque figures that have gone up by almost 25 percent.
So is it noticeable? Well, yes. For starters, the Safari is much better in gear than it ever was and is also much more drivable in the city with a very linear and predictable throttle response. What is nicer though is the fact that the car has even more poke on the highway than it ever has. And aren't we glad that Tata added the 6-speed gearbox into the Safari Storme Varicor 400 which by itself does help the new Storme cruise a lot better than the older one ever did.
So has the updated power been met with updated suspension or brakes? Well, no. The Safari still comes with the same suspension setup that it got earlier and the same brakes that the updated version gets which means it still behaves like a huge boat that floats around and does not inspire much confidence around corners unless you hold it by its neck and force it to perform.
So have the differences really made a difference? Well, to be honest, no. Yes, the Safari Storme Varicor 400 is better to drive but the least Tata could have done is make sure they add some sort of differentiating factor on the exterior of the car. That said, if you are a Tata or a Safari Storme fan, this is as good as it gets for this platform and this is definitely the best Tata Safari Storme ever made but on the whole, this could be a missed opportunity for Tata to rejuvenate a product that seems to be on its last legs.
