Renault plans to launch new versions of the Kwid in February 2016

Renault Kwid

After receiving an overwhelmingly response for the Kwid, the French manufacturer plans to launch its second wave of assault on market leader Maruti Suzuki with the announcement of the 1.0-litre engine variant and automated manual transmission (AMT). Renault will showcase both these variants at the Delhi Auto Expo 2016. The carmaker had launched the Kwid in the beginning of the last quarter of 2015. Powered by a 799cc 3-cylinder petrol engine, the Renault Kwid was launched in six variants, with prices ranging from Rs 2.57-3.53 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Kwid so far has received over 80,000 bookings since its launch in September. With the launch of the Kwid's new variants, Renault expects to double sales figures in 2016.

The litre capacity engine and AMT variants of the Kwid is a direct completion to Maruti's Alto K10 and K10 AT which are attractively priced at Rs 3.2-3.98 lakh for the manual and Rs 4.02 lakh for the automatic variants. The smaller Alto 800 is offered by Maruti at Rs 2.52-3.62 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).

Maruti's bread-and-butter vehicle, Alto, is the highest selling passenger vehicle in India. Till now Hyundai had been the closest rival for Maruti with the Eon, but the gap between the two cars in terms of success has been a wide one. Is the Renault Kwid the game changer for the French manufacturer? Watch this space as we keep you updated with the latest news updates in the auto industry.
