In the recent past, a lot is being said about Vijay Mallya and his businesses. One thing that he has managed to do well so far is keep his Formula1 team as far away from trouble as possible. But recent reports suggest that Renault intends to buy majority stake in the team.
Meanwhile Renault has had a fair bit of success as a Formula1 team, with two champion victories under its belt in 2005 and 2006 with Fernando Alonso. However, the French manufacturer withdrew as a full team and instead became a engine supplier in 2010. There too, it tasted some success as Red Bull took four consecutive driver's and constructors' championship titles.
With its contract with Red Bull and Toro Rosso about to expire at the end of the next season Renault will has three options andndash; continue as an engine supplier for these two teams, return to the sport as a full manufacturer or quit Formula1 altogether. Renault's brand ambassador Alain Prost has had a chat with Force India Team Principal Vijay Mallya and the two parties have already met twice in order to discuss the terms and conditions.
While no decision has been taken as yet, it seems that Force India is willing to consider minority stake holders in the team. Mallya said, "We talked generally about their interest in about potentially becoming a constructor, that they are talking to multiple teams and about what is my vision and what is possible and not possible."
Renault has also been talking with a couple of other teams, but going by the current situation and the way Force India has been performing this season, it would seem like the best option for them as of now.
