Michael Schumacher?'s son to race in Chennai

Mick Schumacher

The son of former seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher, Mick will be the cynosure of everyone's eye at the final race of the 2015/16 season of the MRF Challenge at the Irungattukottai race track this weekend. The 16-year-old will be making his debut in the competition and he was also the first among all the participants to arrive in Chennai.

F1 superstar Michael Schumacher has been in coma since 2013 after suffering life-threatening injuries in a skiing accident in Switzerland. The 45-year-old is currently being treated in a purpose-built medical suite at his lakeside home in Geneva.

His condition, however, hasn't stopped Schumacher Jr from competing in Formula car races. As Schumacher's health status is a closely-guarded secret, media and even fellow racers are kept at bay from Mick.

The FIA-inscribed MRF International Challenge, with a card of four races, will kick also off the 2016 season of the MMSC FMSCI National Racing Championship that opens at the iconic MMRT track in Sriperumbudur this weekend. Apart from Mick, a clutch of overseas drivers including son of seven-time Formula One World champion Jean Alesi, Giuliano and Harrison Newey, son of leading F1 designer Adrian Newey, will grab maximum eyeballs at the circuit.

Saloon cars expected at the MMRT

With the championship still wide open, the focus would be as much on the front-runners. Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi, grandson of two-time F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi, heads the leaderboard with 168 points, ahead of Tatiana Calderon from Colombia (150), Russian Nikita Troitcki (137) and Belgium's Alessio Picariello (134). The lone Indian flagbearer in the competition is Chennai teenager Tarun Reddy who stands at sixth position in the championship currently.

Including the MRF Challenge, a total of 10 races are scheduled at the MMRT this season, including the final round of the MRF International Challenge series for Renault engine-powered Formula 2000 machines.

The National Championship will have double-headers in the MRF F1600 and the two classes of the Saloon cars andndash; the Super Stock and the Indian Junior Touring Cars.

Two other categories, the Formula LGB 1300 and the Indian Touring Car, will join the championship from the second round to be held in March. Also on this weekend's programme card is a support event of two races for Honda CBR 250 bikes.
