Petrol heads seldom need occasions to express their undying love for automobiles. However, junctures like the World Automotive Day, celebrated globally on Friday, give fresh reasons for automotive enthusiasts to push the boat out. Czech carmaker Skoda was one of the first automakers to give fans their due on the day. It cheekily teased Indian automobile fans with a legacy video that closes with the new Superb. The audio-visual was also released on their YouTube channel on Friday.
The video timeline commences with the shots of the Landamp;K Slavia bicycle that was one of the first machines to come out of the stables of Skoda, in the year 1899. As the timeline progresses further, one can relive the evolution of Skodas automobiles beginning from the Landamp;K type CCD motorcycle, made in 1906.
While the Skoda 860 spelt the beginning of a new dawn for the European carmaker, it was for the likes of the first generation Skoda Superb, Rapid, 440 Spartak, 445 Octavia, Felicia and andScaron;koda 1000 MB that proved to be the gamechanger for the Czech company.
First launched in the 1930s, the Skoda Superb has been one of the flagbearers for the automaker ever since and it will now see an all-new avatar being rolled out in India, in the 120th year of the car manufacturer's work in the automotive industry.
The new Skoda Superb is based on Volkswagen group's MQB platform that also underpins the likes of the new VW Passat and the Audi A4. The new Superb is now 80mm longer in terms of wheelbase than the current generation car but is 75kg lighter. The added space of course means even more interior legroom for rear seat passengers.
Expect the car to come in both petrol and diesel variants, with rectified 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre VW engines in the reckoning. Both manual and automatic transmission would likely be available on the new sedan.
In terms of features, the new Skoda Superb could get creature comforts like three way climate control, park assist with a camera and a panoramic sunroof. The Skoda Superb is also set to get eight airbags as standard.
With an expected price tag of around Rs 22-24 lakh, the new Skoda Superb would lock horns directly with the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Jetta.
