BMW Has No Plans To Develop An M2 Convertible

If you were holding off on getting a BMW M2 until a Bimmer created a convertible variant, then you might as well just go grab yourself an M2 coupe or suck it up and buy a BMW M235i convertible. Why do you ask? Because in an interview with CarAdvice, Frank Isenberg – the chief engineer of the M2 – said that there won’t be an M2 convertible simply because there isn’t a need for one.

Like it or not, the BMW M2 was made for track day. Sure, it belongs on the street too, but the track is its natural home. As Isenberg put it, “We’ve got such a nice M235i convertible. And convertibles are not for racetracks, they’re for cruising,” he continued, “You can take that car on a racetrack as well, but you wouldn’t choose it for track day. That’s the reason we said no (to an M2 Convertible).”

Granted the M2 isn’t quite as hardcore as the 1M was, but that still doesn’t form the basis to have an M2 convertible. Isenberg claims that BMW needs to keep the M2 as purist as it did with the 1M, so don’t expect a change of heart anytime in the near future. At the end of the day, it really isn’t all that upsetting – the M235i is a nice drop top.
