Geneva 2016: Maruti Suzuki to showcase Made-in-India Baleno

Maruti Suzuki Baleno

To be showcased in its Euro-spec trim that was unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show, the Baleno will take pride of place at Maruti Suzuki's stall in Geneva, Switzerland. India is the global manufacturing hub of the Baleno, and it would be exported to European countries like the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark and Spain from here.

The Baleno recently made history when it became the first car ever to be exported from India to Japan when its first batch landed at Toyohashi Port earlier this month. Maruti Suzuki manufactures the Baleno at its Manesar plant.

In its UK-spec, the Baleno is powered by a 1-litre, direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine. The hatchback will also get a 1.2-litre SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) powertrain featuring engine assist from an integrated starter generator connected to a lithium ion battery. Transmission options include a 5 speed manual as well as an automatic gearbox. In addition to the powertrain, certain differences are also expected between the Indian and the European Balenos.

After making a splash at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, the Baleno will be launched in the United Kingdom in June 2016. Positioned a notch above the Swift, it will play ball with the likes of the Volkswagen Golf, Hyundai i20, and the Honda Jazz in European markets. Maruti Suzuki has also confirmed that they will be launching the Baleno RS with the Boosterject engine later this year in India.
