Geneva 2016: Audi Q2 teased ahead of show debut

Audi Q2 teaser

The latest teaser for the upcoming Audi Q2 comes in the way of a mysteriousthat showcases the compact crossover's headlights and part of the front end in a cheekily innovative way. Using pancakes, an artist speed-draws various small details of the Q2's front end, and then promptly proceeds to finish up what looks like a tasty Audi pancake.

It is certainly a deviation from the normal teasers that we are used to seeing around big auto shows, and pretty well executed. And it also shows that the Germans have a sense of humor.

From previous teasers and leaks, we already know that the upcoming Q2 will be Audi's entry-level SUV when it is launched. Based on the MQB platform that also underpins the Audi A3 and the VW Golf, the Q2 will offer more space and thanks to the stiffer, lighter body. The inclusion of multi-link rear-suspension means it should out-drive the small A1, although cost implications could see the Q2 share the less sophisticated torsion-beam set-up used by less powerful Volkswagen Golfs.

A has indicated that the Q2 will be a four-door crossover with a relatively conventional hatchback silhouette. LED-accented headlights up front flank what looks like Audi's new "singleframe" grille shape, while a rising character line along the sides is vaguely visible under the cover. It's hard to tell at this point how the Q2 will compare in size to the Q3, which is 4384mm long and competes with crossovers like the BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

Under the hood, the Q2 is expected to have the same engine lineup as its smaller brother, the Audi A1. At the base end, it will have the 1.0 TFSI engine, and continue upwards with a 1.4 TFSI, 1.4 TDI, and 1.6 TDI. The 1.4s and 1.6 TDI will be eventually replaced by 1.5-liter engines. On the other hand, reports coming from the rumor mill suggest that the more powerful 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TFSI could make it on the engine list as well. Transmissions will come in the form of a 5-speed manual (for the 1.0 TFSI model), 6-speed manual, and 7-speed S tronic automatic.

Front-wheel drive will reportedly come as standard and all-wheel-drive as an option for those who want better handling dynamics on the road. However, don't expect lots of ground clearance and good approach/departure angles, as the Q2 isn't exactly a full-blooded SUV or an off-roader.

Release dates for the Audi Q2 are expected to be confirmed at Geneva next month, but the small SUV should be on sale by next year. Expect it to be priced at a premium over the current A1.
