New McLaren spied, possibly the 570S GT

McLaren 570S GT

Remember the time McLaren showed off a sexy (as far as automotive innards go, that is) carbon-fibre tub destined to be the hub of a new breed called the Sport Series, earlier this year? This here is the second sports car based on that chassis, the first being the 570S, but we still don't know what it exactly is. Or it could also be the third, if you factor in the "entry-level" 540C.

The most common deduction is that this is the 570S GT, the grand tourer version of the original sports car. Because, although it's clearly based on the 570S, it has a completely different, elongated roofline that, as far as we can tell, liberates room behind the front seats. It is slightly taller than the standard 570S and stretches back further to the rear decklid. It seems apparent that it has been designed to improve headroom and therefore being able to accommodate two rear-seat passengers.

Since it's going to be aimed to a different buyer than existing models, the new Sports Series that's tentatively known as the 570S "GT" could very well have a pair of rear seats, making it McLaren's first four seater andndash; or, more accurately, 2+2.

If we are correct in our conjecture, the "GT" will use the MonoCell carbon fiber tub and 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 that form the basis for all current McLarens. The interior will be more luxurious and it makes sense to be offered in two variants, with 570 and 540 PS for the 570S and base 540C respectively.

Either way, we will know for sure at one of the major auto shows next year.
