In 2013, Hyundai announced plans to launch N Performance, a sub-brand that will develop performance-oriented versions of the company’s existing products and handle its ambitious World Rally Championship program. Three years have passed since then and the very first production model to wear the "N" badge has been spotted testing on public roads. The high-performance model is based on the next-generation i30 hatchback, which is also being prepared for the 2017 model year.
Not much is officially known about the Hyundai i30 N — the name also isn’t set in stone — but certain details have surfaced the web recently via reports and statements from people working for the Korean brand. Juicy bits include the fact that it will be offered in two flavors output-wise, with a choice of two transmissions, and a handful of race-bred chassis components based on those of the i20 WRC rally car.
The performance-oriented hatchback will hit the market by the end of 2016 and will compete against already established offerings such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST. Will the i30 N have what it takes to steal customers from these popular brands? We won’t find out until it makes its official debut, but until then, let’s have a closer look at what we already know about it.
