Brijmohan Lall Munjal, chairman emeritus of the Hero MotoCorp passed away after a prolonged illness at a hospital in Delhi at the age of 92. Brijmohan Lall Munjal was the founder of the Hero group under which Hero MotoCorp forms its two-wheeler division. He started the Hero Group with bicycles manufacturing in late 1950's and was soon a popular in the Indian market. Hero Cycles Ltd was also the first manufacturer to export bicycles from India and in 1986 it entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest manufacturers of bicycles in the world. Brijmohan Lall Munjal is credited as the godfather of the Indian two-wheeler industry and in 1984 the Hero Group started a joint venture with Hero Honda and established a plant at Dharuhera Haryana.
The frugal, affordable, easy to maintain and reliable Hero Honda commuter motorcycles brought about a revolution in the Indian two-wheeler market with sales surging at a rapid pace. Popular offerings like Hero Splendor, HF Dawn and Passion made Hero Honda, the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world and it has been on top for the past 14 years. In 2011, the JV between both manufacturers ended and Hero MotoCorp was founded. It was during this time that Hero faced its toughest period as the manufacturer didn't have its own Randamp;D facility and it was rumoured that component suppliers and dealers would switch sides and go with Honda. But that didn't happen and one of the key reasons for it was the rapport that Brijmohan Lall shared with his dealers, and vendors. He stepped down from the chairmanship of the group on June 1, making his son Pawan Munjal the chairman, managing director and CEO of Hero MotoCorp.
